PE and Health

Last week in Health we started looking at Positive Gender Relationships. This unit of work is a follow on from our investigation and exploration of Gender and Identity. Students started looking at how we play and work together regardless of gender and stereotypes. It doesn’t matter what gender we are, we can all enjoy activities based on our own interests and not what others expect of us.

In PE we started a unit on Netball. The first lesson was a basic introduction to the game, using fun and basic games of teamwork and passing to teammates with the basic idea of not moving with the ball. It was very fun and the students picked up the basic idea of not moving very quickly.

Interschool Sports

It was a very busy week of interschool sports last week.

We started with Regional Teeball, then House Athletics and District Athletics.

Regional Teeball

Our mixed team finally got to play their regional tournament and in pretty wet conditions the team made their way to Kingston Heath Reserve.

They won their first game comprehensively, but the second game was very close. It came down to the final innings and unfortunately we lost 13-3. They won their final game, so overall they did an amazing job. Congratulations and well done to all the members of the team for a great year. Your teamwork and support of each other throughout the year was outstanding and you should be extremely proud of yourselves.

House Athletics

On Wednesday last week we held our first whole school house athletics event for first time. Everyone came to school in their house colours, then caught the bus to Mentone Athletics track and competed in a number of events including, Discus, Shot Put, long jump, triple jump, high jump and 100m sprint.

It was amazing to see everyone together giving it their very best and trying every event. It was great to see the encouragement and cheering of their friends as they competed and did well.

The day ran extremely well due to all the teachers, staff and student teachers support and I thank them for their efforts.

Thanks also to the parents/carers and friends who came along and supported their children and the school.

District Athletics

On Thursday 27 students were invited to represent our school at the district athletics event. Due to illness only 22 competed on the day, but they tried extremely hard in very wet and challenging conditions and were amazing with their support of each other.

Well done to everyone for competing it was another successful day for our school.

Visual Arts

Last week all students continued to learn about the visual art elements of form, where they continued to work on their Paper Mache sculptures by adding layers of glued paper to make it balanced, secure, and strong. This week Foundation and years 1, 2, 3 students were busy creating an art piece for Father’s Day / Special Person’s Day.

Culture Studies

This week Foundation and years 1, 2, 3 students continued to investigate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture by understanding their connection to ‘The Dreaming’ (Dreamtime stories). This is where they believe how the land and its people were created. The Dreaming can be inspired through song, dance, artwork (painting) and storytelling. These are ways that our First Nations peoples can stay in touch with their ancestry and be a part of the natural world.

Students first watched an animated dreaming story of ‘Tiddalick the frog’, demonstrating how the big flood happened. Then they listened to a dreaming story of ‘How the birds got their colour’, while students were listening, they drew their own visual representation of the story.

In Music the students have continued to learn about the concepts of beat, rhythm and pitch. The prep classes have continued working towards their ‘Beat Detective’ badges and begun notating simple rhythms and performing them to a given beat. The preps have also enjoyed learning how to conduct using a baton.

Year 1/2 have learnt how to recognise simple pitch patterns and notate these using different colours. They have sung the songs ‘Rain, Rain’ and ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ and learnt how to play them on the glockenspiel. Some students were confident enough to improvise their own melodies and perform them for the class.

The Year 3/4’s have been busy playing the singing game ‘Frog in the Meadow’ and singing and dancing with ribbons to the song ‘Calypso’. They have also learnt how to play Frog in the Meadow on the glockenspiels whilst maintaining a steady beat. In addition to this The Year 3/4’s have also begun learning the recorder and are working towards their first belt in their Recorder Karate program. Most students have now mastered the notes B, A and G. They are sounding fantastic!

The Year 5/6’s have completed their work on Indigenous Australian Music and will begin ‘Black Belt Ukulele’ when they return from camp. This is a unique developmental and sequential classroom ukulele program based on the Orff Schulwerk approach of music education. They will be learning to play a variety of musical styles including jazz, Latin, blues and pop. It should be lots of fun!
