Father's Day Liturgy and Breakfast Invitation

Year 8 Chinese Yum Cha Experience

Did you know that ‘Yum cha' is the Cantonese way of saying, “take tea”? While a very familiar word, not all our students have had the opportunity to experience the Chinese way of stopping for a light refreshment and taking tea during the early part of the day.

Throughout this term, the Year 8 Elective Chinese elective classes have been working on a unit of work called, “Let’s Go to Yum cha!”. Students learn about Chinese food and the etiquette associated with dining in traditional Chinese communities. To develop the students’ cultural understanding and appreciation, in Week 5 the Sarto Centre was transformed into a Chinese restaurant, complete with dining tables, Chinese tea and even 2 servers to take orders from the students. Each Year 8 Chinese class had the opportunity to try a variety of popular Chinese dishes, listen to Chinese music and practice their Chinese, ordering their preferred dishes in the language. It was a great opportunity to role-model a real-life experience for the students.

Congratulations to all the Year 8 Chinese classes who participated in the ‘Yum-cha’ activity. Their behaviour was exemplary, making it a positive and valuable learning experience for everyone involved. It was wonderful to see the students building their confidence speaking Mandarin and applying classroom practise into real life situations. Everyone enjoyed the variety of foods, with many of our students experiencing something new for the first time. Please enjoy the photos from the day.

Special thanks to the Maintenance Team for assisting with setting up of the tables and chairs; and to Mrs Kara Manga and Mr Mario Phaesie from our Language Department for assisting me with food delivery and service.

‘Bonne fête de la Bastille’

On Monday 22 August we celebrated a belated “Fête de la Bastille” at St Pius X College. The whole school community had the opportunity to feel the ambiance of the day with a warm welcome of an accordionist playing some musette in the school lobby as well as some various Bastille decorations across the school.  It was then followed by some quick snapshots with the Bastille photo frame accompanied with some French themed props “à la française”. The day was introduced with a “French-themed Assembly” where students studying French from Year 8 to Year 12, spoke in French and English recounting the story behind “La Fête Nationale" (Bastille Day), the relationship between France and Australia, the John Monash Centre in France, and the introduction of the French CLUB. We also had the pleasure of having “The French Counter” for the whole day presenting the Crêpes making workshop to the Year 8 followed by the students ordering their Crêpes in French. It was a “fantastique” day to celebrate and showcasing the French culture at St Pius X.
