Leadership Centre

 Curriculum

Another jam-packed week in the leadership centre has absolutely flown by! It was amazing to see so many students participating in the Indonesian day activities, well done to all students for partaking in the activities! A massive highlight was the batik painting incursion. It was awesome to see so much enthusiasm and excitement on the day.

In Writing sessions last week, students were busy taking risks when creating information reports on the topic of ‘Journey to Discovery’. Just some of the amazing ideas that we saw included topics around space exploration, scientists, and inventors. We are continuing to encourage students to build their capacity to take risks in all of their writing genres. If you would like to find out more about risk-taking or the information reports, please ask your child. Next week, students will be finishing and publishing their information reports and begin to explore narratives! We will be working towards publishing these narratives in the school library.

In Reading, all the classes have been continuing to read the novel “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” which has been very engaging! Throughout our sessions, students have been busy exploring texts from other cultures and nationalities. This week, we spent some time looking at Indonesian texts in our classes and looking at the differences and similarities between their texts and ours. Later in the week, students continued to work on their reading portfolio showcase to show their understanding of the text that they have chosen. It is awesome to see these portfolio pieces taking shape! A highlight has been seeing so many different ways that the students are capable of showing their understandings of genre, authors' intent, character motivations, and plot structure among others.

During Mathematics sessions last week, students continued to explore and use the cartesian plane when working through an open-ended project adding planets, satellites, and space junk to their cartesian planes. It was awesome to see the students making so many cross curricula connections to our Guided Inquiry unit. Students and teachers ran mini-focus conferences and began to explore how the cartesian plane can be used to show translations and enlargements. Students will begin to publish these during the coming week, so keep an eye out on Seesaw in the near future!

For Guided Inquiry last week, the students were busy investigating how they can determine how their new planet will be governed. It was great to see students investigating how the democratic system works and designing their own systems of electing leaders for their planets. In the coming weeks, we will begin to investigate space travel and its current concepts and limitations, and what the future may hold!

  • Blake F - “It has been pretty cool to add the planets to the cartesian plane!”
  • Tia B - “I am enjoying learning about the cartesian plane, it has been a good challenge!”

Pupil of the Week

5/6B: Ava M -

For demonstrating perseverance and love of learning when investigating linear relationships between two variables on a Cartesian plane. You applied the linear rule y=mx+c to show your understanding. Great job Ava.

5/6C: Ivy S -

For displaying a love of learning when working through the Cartesian Plane assessment rubric. Well done for challenging yourself and ensuring you met all the criteria. I can't wait to see your final copy, Ivy!

5/6D: Liam W -

Well done on using your love of learning throughout the information reports this week. I can't wait to read your finished report on the Mariana Trench. It was awesome to see you taking responsible learning risks, amazing work Liam!

5/6EB: Lachie S -

For demonstrating perspective during our debates, especially in the presentation of your second debate against the topic, the Australian government should fund it’s own space station. Your poise and deliberation of a topic which you personally don’t argue with was of an extremely high standard Lachie. It was great to see you take on feedback to improve your presentation. Very impressive Lachie!

5/6W: Trisha A -

For demonstrating love of learning when researching ways in which to create a new civilisation in Guided Inquiry. It has been great to see you think creatively and critically about what organisms need to survive and thrive. Well done, Trisha!
