February 2022
What a wonderful start to the 2022 school year it has been. There is certainly a ‘buzz’ around the campuses with all students reconnecting their peers and teachers, establishing their learning routines and enjoying all that NBC has to offer our Year 7-9 students.
This year has seen significant change to our Year 7/8 timetables as we align with our Goldsworthy campus schedule. This enables our students to experience the best of both settings; the familiarity and connection with their campus and mentor teachers as well as the exposure to the senior school timetable and the diverse pathways opportunities. The new daily schedule has meant our teachers enjoy their own recess and lunch breaks and operate very much in a Secondary School structure. Within the classroom, our incredible teachers have begun to introduce ‘double’ sessions to build learning stamina and depth of knowledge whilst preparing our students for their transition to our Goldsworthy campus in due time.
This is a particularly exciting time for our Year 7 students as they get their first taste of all our Secondary students offerings. We couldn’t be anymore excited to see our SEED program up and running again as well as the launch of our Impact program. Walking around the learning environments I have seen our budding scientists conducting experiments in the Science labs, students developing plans for their latest woodworking project and refining their ICT skills in STEM and Digitech at our GITTC facility. It really is amazing to see so many diverse opportunities for each and every one of our students.
At Wexford Campus, our 7-8 Students started off the year by undertaking the VIA Character Strengths survey. They identified their top strengths and are using this to cultivate self-awareness and reflection. The strengths approach aims to identify, develop and build on what is great about individuals and groups. As you can see, there are a lot of great things about the students and staff at NBC.
Year 9 Leader Mr Bayard interviewed students Julia Thu and Jazlyn Morris on their thoughts on transitioning to Goldsworthy Campus:
What’s something that you’ve really enjoyed about coming across to GW this year?
Julia: I really liked that we have lockers that have the extra layer for your books and so it wouldn’t get so much messy.
Does it make it feel a bit more like high school?
Julia: Yes
Jazlyn: Yeah, it’s been a lot more different than the junior campuses and the timetable is a lot different. Having two-hour sessions instead of one-hour.
Are you finding that’s a bit of a challenge or is that a good thing?
Jazlyn: Um, it can be both. Sometimes it feels like it can drag on a bit, but at the same time it gives you a chance to have your better subjects, you’re enjoying it, you get more time to do that.
What subjects are you really enjoying?
Julia: I’m really enjoying Impact, because you get to act and express how you feel… We’re doing a theme about horror and doing sound effects for horror movies.
Jazlyn: My favourite subject is probably visual art, where we’ve been doing character design and we have Mr Alldis for it, which is a really good teacher.
He is, but don’t tell him that. He’ll get too full of himself.
If there was one tip that you would give someone who is a new student and coming to Goldsworthy, what would it be?
Jazlyn: Probably, make sure that you stay with your friends, but have the opportunity to make new ones.
Julia: Getting ready for your next session. Because sometimes that’s a challenge.
Jazlyn: Yeah, get there early.
