Saints Unplugged

Our annual Saints Unplugged evenings were held in McLaughlin Theatre last week. Wednesday night was for juniors in Years 7-9 and Thursday night for seniors in Years 10-12. The program had a lot of variety with some really entertaining performances. 

The juniors overcame performance nerves and produced some really lovely moments. There was everything from classical piano through to heavy metal guitar. The experience for these students was invaluable. Our seniors performed some difficult pieces and were highly entertaining. It’s heartening to see such talent in our students and their generosity of spirit in sharing that with us all.

Mrs McKenzie’s Year 11 hospitality students provided light meals each evening. Tasty gourmet hot dogs and butter chicken were appreciated by the parents before the concert each night along with refreshing drinks. The hospitality students make events like this all the more enjoyable as an evening out. 

Combined Ensembles Evening

Our annual Combined Colleges Ensemble evening was held in Lennon Hall on Thursday evening. The audience was entertained by the CSC Chamber Singers, Concert Band, String Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. The students and their directors performed really well and it was a most entertaining evening. Again, Mrs McKenzie’s hospitality students outdid themselves with food and beverages. 

Nights like this aren’t possible without the support of our staff and the staff at St Monica’s. Many thanks to Mr Chris Burcin and Mr Adrian Strooper (SMC), Mr Ash Cawse (CSHS), Mr Matthew Chandler and Ms Christine Marnane (SAC). A special thanks to Saints student Mathew Christensen for setting up the sound for the evening.

Father’s Day Assembly 

The senior music class performed for the last time together at the Father’s Day Assembly yesterday. The Years 11 and 12 students performed The General by Dispatch for all the appreciative dads in the audience.

Upcoming Events

Next Wednesday our college performing arts photos will be taken in Lennon Hall before school. Finally in week 10, the CSC String Orchestra and College Choir perform at SMC Live in CPAC on Tuesday evening, and our drama students will present performances in their annual Drama Evening in McLaughlin Theatre on the Wednesday night.

Communication

Much of our communication with students is via Teams and email. Please encourage your son to check these regularly so he stays abreast of what is happening, particularly given we’ve had some very last minutes changes of late due to injury and illness. Also, as a courtesy, your son must personally contact the director of any ensembles he's in or his instrumental music teacher if he'll be absent due to illness or injury, as such information is not passed on by the student office.

Spirit of Arts Awards

All students who participate in Music, Drama, Visual Art, and Film Television and New Media are eligible to apply for an award. Handbooks and journals are available from the arts staffroom, and we encourage everyone to participate in the program.

Understudy Film Festival

• Film submissions are open for Understory Film Festival - Cairns!
• Submission close 4pm on Monday 11 October 2022 or Thursday 7 October if you are entering the high school student category.
• Submit your film through FilmFreeway, follow this link to submit: Understory Film Festival submissions.
• Shortlisted submissions will be screened at Munro Martin Parklands on 25-26 November. 

Entries can count towards the Spirit of Arts Awards.
