Swimming Carnival

The annual St Augustine’s Swimming Carnival was held on the Friday of week 7 at Woree Pool. It was a great community event and I hope that we can build upon this for future years. Congratulations to Walter House for a dominant win and to the age champions who were recognised for their achievements on the day.

Congratulations must also be extended to students who placed in events or got in and had a dig as this is what the day is all about. Finally, thank you to Kirk Donaldson and Tracy Lammert for all their work organising the carnival and to all staff who helped out on the day.

JSS

In week 7, Saints took on Cairns High in JSS. Saints had a tough round against our fierce rivals and, unfortunately, only achieved victory in AFL. Basketball, football and touch all suffered tight losses and the volleyball team has had their fixture rescheduled to week 10. Saints bounced back in week 8 against Peace Lutheran to claim victory in four out of five fixtures. AFL, basketball, football and touch all earnt convincing victories with basketball unluckily going down to a Peace Lutheran buzzer beater! We will be looking to finish the term strongly against St Mary’s in week 9.

Year 7/8 Rugby League - By Steve McDonough, Head of Year 8

The 2022 Schoolboy Rugby League season ended with the completion of the Year 7/8 competition last Wednesday. Our Saints boys were determined to win the competition for the third year in a row against an equally hungry Trinity Bay State High side but fell short in a tightly contested grand final, going down by 4 points.

The road to the final was highly successful, finishing top of our pool with dominant wins over Woree State High, Bentley Park College and St Mary's College. Winning Pool 1 we took  on the second qualifier from Pool 2, Gordonvale State High, in a game we won 40-10. We went into the grand final against Trinity Bay High confident but with the knowledge this would be our toughest game of the season.

The grand final began well, with two first half tries to Jack Calleja, and some stoic defence on our try-line took us to a 12-6 lead into halftime. However, we were unable to keep the talented Trinity Bay side out in the second half, conceding two tries and being unable to score ourselves. The final score was 12-16.

We congratulate Trinity Bay on their win and thank all schoolboy teams who participated in the competition for making 2022 a great season. We thank Mr Di Salvo for coaching the team, along with Mr Jarrod Batten and Mr Kieren Lis whose help at training and games during the season was invaluable and much appreciated.

We also thank the more than 30 squad members who took the field for Saints at some point throughout the season. The players conducted themselves in an exemplary manner and we're proud of them and their season.

First XIII Development Game v Kirwan SHS

The First XIII took on Kirwan High in a development fixture on Tuesday 30 August. Both schools fielded young squads with an eye to the future. Saints earnt an 18-12 victory with tries to Lachlan Magill, Gabe Wood and Abu-John Mye. I look forward to seeing the squad's development as we build towards the 2023 season. Thanks to Mr Kris O’Farrell and Mr Dennis Tomarchio for coordinating the trial.

Rugby League 9s

St Augustine’s entered teams into the Years 7, 8 and 9 rugby league 9s competitions during weeks 7 & 8. The Year 7 team finished second in their pool on for and against due to a tie which, unfortunately, made them ineligible for the grand final. However, they showed their class with a dominant 6 tries to 1 victory against Good Counsel College in the play-off for third. The Year 8 team came away with second place based on for and against, and the Year 9s were also runners-up after they tied the grand final but were awarded second place as their opposition scored first. Thanks to Mr Lis and Mr Anderson for coaching the teams. We look forward to going one better in 2023!

TCC Cricket Trials

TCC 13-15 years cricket trials are being held on Monday 5 September at the St Augustine’s cricket nets. Students who have registered have been sent a parent slip and must complete this and the Peninsula permissions booklet to be eligible to attend the trials.
