Numeracy News 2022 - Newsletter T1 W4 -  Mrs Catherine LeHunt

Welcome to Numeracy News at St Mary’s. My name is Catherine Le Hunt.  Many of the families may know me as I have been a part of the St Mary’s family for many years.  This year sees me change from the role of classroom teacher to the role of Numeracy Leader. I spent last year being mentored by Anna Side and look forward to working hard, delivering explicit teaching and further developing Numeracy at our school.

Sometimes change happens quickly and sometimes change occurs over many years. This is true for how Numeracy is learned and taught. Think of the ways in which many of you were taught Numeracy. It may look and sound very different from how your child is learning Numeracy today. Practices and pedagogies are adapted or adopted to provide for this. Underpinning all of what St Mary’s believes in and practices in Numeracy Education is outlined by the Get in2 Maths document published by The Melbourne Archdiocese of Catholic Schools as well as being aligned with the Victorian Curriculum and is organized into the strands of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability and it is these standards that children are measured against and reported on. From Foundation (Prep) to Year Six a range of assessment and data collection tools are used to enable each child to be taught at their point of need.

Something to try at home if you’d like:

In a farmhouse, there are a number of chickens and cows.

We know that together these animals have 35 heads and 94 legs.

Do you know how many cows and chickens there are on this farm?

Literacy and Literacy Intervention -  Mrs Anna Heta

My name is Anna Heta. This year I will be working as St Mary’s Literacy Leader and will be supporting students through Literacy Intervention. I was lucky enough to join the St Mary’s community last year and am really looking forward to continuing to work with our staff, students and parents this year.

English at St Mary’s is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum. Each day, we dedicate time to explicitly teach and model Literacy skills through the language modes of Speaking and Listening, Reading and Viewing and Writing. Our students are provided with the opportunity to be immersed in a wide range of texts and empowered to participate in rich discussions about texts they read. Students have the opportunity to learn during whole class, small group and in 1:1 situations.

At St Mary’s we carefully monitor all student’s literacy achievement and growth, which enables us to cater for the individual needs and abilities of all our students. In my role of Literacy Intervention, I will provide small group and 1:1 support to students who require additional assistance with the English Curriculum in Years One, Two and Three.

I am really looking forward to fostering a love of literacy for all students at St Mary’s.

ST MARY’S SPORTS CARNIVAL  -  Mrs Chris Kidman (P.E. teacher)

St Mary’s Sports Carnival will be held at Alma Park on Thursday 31st March 2022 at 12.30pm.  Students are to wear their Sport Uniform and house colour T-Shirt with a safety pin attached for ribbons.  Parents, friends and family are welcome to attend and watch from behind the fence.  You may like to bring a picnic lunch to have whilst you watch. House colours are Red, Blue, Green and Yellow.  Ask your child what team they are in.

eLEARNING - Ms Daniela Borgese

This week I thought I would share an article from Common Sense Media ‘Parents’ Ultimate Guide to Roblox’. Although Roblox has been around for a while it seems to have remained popular among our students. This article answers all those common questions for parents … Is Roblox safe for kids? How does it work? And what are Robux? It’s also a good reminder to check parental controls and to talk to children about online safety.

While you are at Common Sense Media if you haven’t already I suggest having a look around. As teachers, we often use this website to find (or check for) age-appropriate books, apps and websites. We love the ‘What’s New’ section which gives you the lowdown on the next big thing a millisecond before our students are into it.
