Welcome to our Transition Students

A message from Mrs Sarah Farmer (Transition Teacher):

I would like to warmly welcome our transition students to Guyra Central School. To say we have had a great start would be an understatement. We have had an amazing start to the program with the students thoroughly engaged and willing to participate in all activities. We are very lucky to have access to the Sensory Learning Area each week as our own space to play and it is also working well as a drop-off and pick up point. A huge thank you to our parents and carers for making this process as smooth as possible.

Each week students are working on activities that will be placed in a scrapbook to take home at the end of the term/semester. The students have been enjoying establishing relationships with the others in the class and working on different play-based activities to build fine and gross motor skills.

If you have any questions or would like to touch base at any time please feel free to leave a message with the front office staff and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Otherwise I am more than happy to have a chat during drop off and pick up time.

If youwere at the show last weekend I hope you had a chance to check out our class mural that was on display in the pavilion.

I look forward to a wonderful year together.

Mrs Sarah Farmer

Year 7 off to a flying start........

On Tuesday 1st February a group of nervously excited individuals had their first day in Year seven at Guyra Central School.

All students were given a diary, a map, a timetable, a staff directory and a Yonder pouch for their mobile phone. Each item was explained to the students.

The Diaries are to be used each day to record important information such as homework

and assignments and also contain information on time management, goal setting and other helpful things to improve their skills as learners.

The map and timetable were closely examined and most students were at least slightly confident they would be able to use them to find their way, one student did comment later in the day he had been lost 301 times. I am sure this situation has improved as the days have passed.

Yonder pouches are for students to lock their phones in if they bring them to school, if students do not have a phone they still need to have the pouches in their bag each day for inspection. If students lose or damage the pouch there will be a $10 replacement fee.

From all reports students are enjoying all the new experiences being in High School is bringing them including Peer support sessions where they meet with members of year 11 who are helping them adjust to the new routines and expectations of High School.

If parents of year seven students have any concerns or questions please don’t hesitate to contact the school.

Aurora Opportunity Virtual Classroom Program

Dean Rumbel and Thomas Ward have been selected to join other Rural and Remote students, from across NSW, in the Year 5 Aurora Opportunity Virtual Classroom. Aurora provides a mix of online and residential school classes. Students connect with their classmates in timetabled lessons through a virtual learning environment, which comprises web conferencing software, a learning management system, and a range of cutting edge online communication and collaboration tools.

The school also operates one of the state's first fully digital school libraries.

Good luck and thank you to all the students who put their hand up for this great opportunity.

Guyra Central School has partnered with Aurora College for a few years now and we currently have Colton Taylor (Year 7) and Dante Lloyd (Year 11) undertaking a blended pathway with Guyra/Aurora College.

Our Primary Sensory Learning Area Project

Our Primary Quad Learning area continues to be a focus with six beautiful murals set to adorn the walls during 2022. Murals are being created by our students under the guidance of Ms Kay Smith, Artist-in-Residence and Guyra Central School Art Therapist.

Late in Term 4, 2021; Kay Smith commenced our mural project with a workshop with our stage 3 students. These workshops, during 2022 have expanded to include students from Stage 4.  During these workshops, students used their creativity to design images reflecting how they see Guyra and our community.  Kay has used parts of our students work to design each part  of our murals and the first of 6 beautiful murals is just about complete.

It is an exciting project for our students and Kay will continue to  work with our students to create our amazing murals during the year.
