Year 2 Maths – Mass Contextual Learning

Did you visit Europe over the holidays and have trouble with your baggage allowance?

Well, Year 2 are here to help you!

In maths, we have been comparing the weight of objects using an equal arm balance.

Repurposing household items, we even created our own equal arm balances to take home.

In the future, to ensure your baggage meets travel requirements of 20kg, Year 2 know that your luggage and 20kg of ice-cream would need to be even on an equal arm balance!

Books to Life

Every single child in Pre-K to Year 6 was totally enthralled by Tony & his creative team from Books to Life as they transformed the book, “Jørn’s Magnificent Imagination” by Coral Vass and illustrated by Nicky Johnston (which was on the notable list for the "CBCA Picture Book of the Year) into an incredibly entertaining & engaging live stage show.

Tony used all areas of the Arts to present the book on stage: drama, dance, music, media arts & visual arts. There were original songs, mask, puppetry, props, costumes, painted & digital projections of sets, loads of audience participation and lots of laughs.

Jørn’s Magnificent Imagination is a book about celebrating new ideas that can make a world of difference. “Jørn’s Magnificent Imagination” is the true story of Jørn Utzon, the architect of the world-renowned Sydney Opera House. This year marks the Opera House’s 50th birthday. Tony Bones gave us a chance to follow Jørn through his life as he discovered his love of building and creating, gathering ideas from everything around himself. In his childhood, Jørn has an interest in swans, flowers, seashells, even his orange peels at breakfast. As he grew, Jørn’s ideas grew too until he has his most magnificent idea which he entered in a competition and he won. The Sydney Opera House is now listed as a World Heritage Site.

Throughout his Jørn’s life, not everyone loved his ideas, but the support of his parents and his own self-belief allowed his imagination and creativity to prosper. By watching his life being retold, we were reminded of the importance of taking the time to dream and create, and of the incredible power of the imagination.

This show took us beyond the book and vividly brought it to life. From the lighting, animations, props, backdrop, singing and dialogue - it was entertaining from beginning to end and both teachers and students had a ball! Tony had everyone engaged and even managed to get us all dancing. It was entertaining, informative and accessible to students of all ages. The show had everything - audience participation, history, humour, puppetry and lots of props and special effects.

"The architect’s gift to society is to bring joy to the people from the surroundings they create" – Jørn Utzon.
