Mathematics - (Mrs Catherine LeHunt)

Regularly the students at St Mary's were invited to make connections between their learning and the world in which we live.  This week in Mathematics, the students were invited to make connections between their Mathematics learning and Football ( Soccer).  Especially on Monday during our Footy Fever Day.

Here are a few examples:

  1. A Soccer Team has 11 players on the field.  When the Matildas played Canada last week, how many players from both teams were on the field?
  2. Matildas' Captain, Sam Kerr has been in the news this week.  Her photos in the papers were in the shape of a rectangle with a width of 12 cm and a length of 18 cm.  Find the perimeter of that photo.
  3. A rectangular photo of Matildas' Captain Sam Kerr has an area of 220 square centimeters. What MAY be the length and width of that photo? Give 3 possible answers.
  4. The Matildas had to play Canada, who were hot favourites to win, BUT what probability do you think MOST Australian people gave the Matildas to win that match if "zero" is no chance and "1" is certainly? Use a fraction for your answer.  Give two reasons for your answer.
