Keeping Our Kids Safe - Navigating the Digital World

In recent times, we've witnessed a significant increase in the use of digital devices in society, including within schools. While technology opens up new avenues for learning and exploration, it's essential that we support students to be safe and address concerns regarding inappropriate behaviour.

Buninyong Primary School’s Digital Devices policy can be found on our website. This also includes the ICT acceptable use agreement. Please ensure that you are familiar with these guidelines as they outline the expectations we have for students around the safe and responsible use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

In today's interconnected world, children are exposed to digital devices at an increasingly young age. These devices offer educational benefits and ways to connect with others. As educators and parents, it's our collective responsibility to guide children in using technology safely and responsibly, as well as to help them make informed decisions when navigating the digital world.

Maintaining open lines of communication with your child is crucial. Encourage them to share their online experiences with you, both positive and negative. By fostering an environment of trust, your child will be more likely to come to you with any concerns they encounter online.

Tips for Parents and Guardians

  • Establish Guidelines: Set clear rules for screen time, device usage, and appropriate content. Ensure your child understands the boundaries and consequences of breaking these rules.
  • Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date with the latest apps, websites, and online trends that your child might be exposed to. This will help you understand their online world better.
  • Use Parental Controls: Many devices and platforms offer parental control settings. Utilise these tools to limit access to inappropriate content and to monitor your child's online activities.
  • Teach Critical Thinking: Help your child develop critical thinking skills by discussing the credibility of online information, the importance of respecting others' opinions, and recognizing potential scams or dangers.
  • Encourage Kindness: Teach your child the value of treating others with respect and empathy, both online and offline. Remind them that their words have an impact, even in the virtual world.

Resources for Online Safety

We encourage you to visit the eSafety website for valuable resources, tips, and information about online safety for children and families. The eSafety website is an excellent platform for understanding the latest online challenges and finding guidance on how to address them effectively. https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents

While the digital world offers incredible opportunities, it's essential that we equip our children with the tools they need to navigate it safely.

Thank you for your continued support.
