Living Kaurna Cultural Centre

On Thursday the 17th of August, the Aboriginal students from GPS went on an excursion to the Living Kaurna Cultural Centre. We traveled by bus and it took over an hour to get there.

When we got there it was raining so we had something to eat and played some games. When the rain stopped, we experienced a Welcome to Country and sat on logs for a smoking ceremony. We learnt that a smoking ceremony is used to cleanse the area and the people, to get the bad spirits away and to protect its visitors.

After the smoking ceremony, we split into 2 groups. One group went on a guided bush walk and saw a hut, a wombat statue, frogs carved out of wood and a real-life kookaburra. We learnt that Aboriginal people used animal skins to cover their huts and use on the floor of their huts. We listened to Dreamtime stories and tasted native lemongrass, saltbush and native river mint used by the Aboriginal people for cooking and medicine. The other group learned how to weave using raffia. We learnt that weaving was used to make bowls. After, the 2 groups swapped activities.

On this excursion, we felt happy and proud to be an Aboriginal person and we had a wonderful time learning about the Aboriginal culture. We would like to thank Kylie, Mrs Michael, Ms Schina, Deb and Kelly for taking us on this excursion.
