As the sun-drenched fields of the State Athletics Facility prepare to host the much-anticipated Andrews Cup Athletics Competition on Thursday 17 August, the air is charged with anticipation and enthusiasm amongst our Primary girls. With a record-breaking participation of 52 athletes, the event promises to be a showcase of athleticism, sportsmanship, and the spirit of healthy competition.

 

The athletes, hailing from the associated schools, have been rigorously training and honing their skills in preparation for this event at Metro Lead Up meets. From sprinting to long jumps, shot puts to relays, the competition will span a diverse range of track and field events, offering the spectators a thrilling display of Primary girls’ sport.

 

The Andrews Cup Athletics Competition is not just about winning medals; it's about fostering camaraderie, healthy rivalry, and the spirit of sportsmanship. As the competition date draws closer, excitement continues to build, promising an unforgettable display of talent, sportsmanship, and the undying spirit of competition on the tracks of SAF.

Poppy Stephen (Year 12) - Swimming

 

In the world of competitive swimming, emerging talents often make their mark in ways that leave a lasting impression. One such prodigious swimmer is Year 12 student, Poppy Stephen, whose remarkable performance at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad has ignited fervent support from her college community, who have been cheering her on with unwavering enthusiasm each day.

 

Poppy's journey through the games has been nothing short of extraordinary. Competing in multiple events, including the 50m, 100m, and 200m backstroke, as well as her specialty, the 200m butterfly. The early stages of the competition saw Poppy conquering the heats by progressing through to finals in every event.

 

However, it was in the tightly contested 200m butterfly race that Poppy truly showcased her talent. The competition was fierce, with two Australian swimmers vying for the coveted gold medal. In the end, it was a breathtaking spectacle of grit. With sheer determination and backing her training, she clinched the silver medal in the 200m butterfly event.

 

Poppy Stephen's remarkable journey at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad has undoubtedly marked her as a rising star in the landscape of swimming. As Poppy's journey continues, it's clear that she will be one to watch in future competitions. Her silver medal in the 200m butterfly is just a glimpse of what lies ahead for Poppy.
