Big Band Workshop with James Morrison

Students from Big Band had the amazing opportunity to be involved in a workshop with James Morrison in the lead up to Jazz on the Green. All the students got to ask James any question that came to mind. No topic was too broad, even breakfast cereals. Sultana Bran is James Morrison’s favourite cereal if anyone was wondering. Other topics that were covered were dealing with nerves, playing through fatigue and how James went from amateur musician to a professional performer. It was amazing listening to James speak so passionately and everyone left the workshop inspired.

Guest Speaker, Hilary Thurlow (Class of 2013)

Hilary Thurlow is an arts writer and worker from Brisbane. She is a co-director at Boxcopy Contemporary Art Space, an artist-run initiative in Brisbane. In 2018 Hilary completed a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours in Art History at The University of Queensland and participated in The Goldsmiths Summer School ‘Curating the Contemporary’ at the British School in Rome. She has also worked and volunteered in variety of institutions including QAGOMA, Griffith University Art Museum and UQ Art Museum.

Most recently, she is a PHD candidate at Monash Art, Design and Architecture, who has recently been accepted for the Fulbright Scholarship, to travel to the USA as part of her research. Hilary’s PhD focuses on the gap in studies of the work of USA based Cuban artist Tania Bruguer.

Students were fascinated with her journey from Clayfield, and the change of trajectory in her studies, to follow her passion in the Arts. She also advised creative students to immerse themselves in their aesthetic field and to embrace all opportunities that arise.
