Innovation in Maths Teaching and Learning

From the Principal and Mathematics Faculty at Moama Anglican Grammar:

We are very excited to inform you about some changes that are underway in our Maths department. Traditionally in schools, it can be challenging for one teacher to cater to the learning needs of 20 or more individual students in a busy classroom. As a result, there are times where not every student has experienced success in maths, with some students finding it particularly stressful or difficult.

Our teaching team is now working very hard to change that, by changing the structure of our maths curriculum so that instead of all students learning the same topic at the same time, each student will focus on only what they are ready to learn. This means that every student can experience success in maths.

Our maths team will be sending home further communication to parents about these changes and we hope there will be opportunities for information sessions later in the year (either on-site, or virtual – depending on relevant guidelines at the time).

Initially in Term’s 3 and 4 this year, the Maths department will pilot this new approach to learning and teaching using Maths Pathway as the core resource for students in Years 7 and 8. Following successful implementation, Maths Pathway will then roll out for students in Years 7 to 9 in 2021.

In the meantime, we encourage you to chat with your child about about what it means to have a growth mindset (you can find out more about this at  https://www.mindsetkit.org/growth-mindset-parents).

Australian Maths Competition

Our students are still able to extend themselves and engage in extra-curricular opportunities during what has been a unique and challenging year. Students in our Years 9 and 10 (5.1/5.2/5.3) Maths and Year 11 Maths Advanced classes are taking part in the Australian Mathematics Trust (AMT) Australian Maths Competition over Weeks 4 to 6 this term. The AMT have set a competition, run flexibly this year, with students completing either the online or paper version of the test. Our passionate mathematics students took on a 30 question problem solving test, with questions increasing in difficulty as the paper progresses. Participation and outstanding results will be recognised later in the year, including presentation of certificates. Well done to those students for extending and enriching their learning experience with mathematics!

HSC Biology Dissection

Students in HSC Biology have been learning about the structure and function of the Eye, Ears and Kidney and had the opportunity to complete an eye dissection and a Kidney dissection. We were lucky to have generous donations from the community. The eyes were donated by Greenham Abattoirs in Tongala and the kidneys were donated by Sandy’s Mobile Butchering in Echuca Moama. A big shout out also to Mitchell Wiltshire in our IT department for bringing the eyes across the border for us!
