The Conoco Phillips

Science Experience

Are you a student in Year 9 or 10 with an interest in Science? Do you have an interest in a particular aspect of Science, such as forensic science, ecology, zoolology, robotics, biomedical science, agricultural science, engineering or astronomy?

If so, you might be interested in registering for the Conoco Phillips Science Experience! The experience is a three or four day opportunity in a school holiday period to participate in experiments, attend lectures and 'get a taste' for university life. The program is held in over 35 tertiary institutions, each with its own focus and flavour. The program offers you the chance to meet with other students with similar interests from schools across Australia. Your work over these days will give you insights into possible careers in the Science, Technology and Engineering fields and may help plot your future pathway.

If you are a student in Year 9 or 10, you are welcome to register for any experience that appeals to your interest base. Victorian opportunities are held at the Queenscliff Marine and Discovery Centre, RMIT, Swinburne University, Federation University Ballarat and Gippsland, The University of Melbourne, Dookie and Swinburne University and KIOSC, Wantirna Campus. If you are willing to arrange transport (and assuming that interstate travel restrictions ease) then you are able to apply for any of the interstate experience options. Each university offers a different program that will appeal to different interests.

The cost is $190 for a three-day program and $260 for a four-day program. The program is also supported by Rotary, making scholarships possible for students to pursue at a local Rotary club.

The program has been suspended over the current time of restrictions but organisers hope to resume normal programs from August. There are various opportunities through December and January which will hopefully proceed. If any programs are cancelled due to the ongoing restrictions then all monies paid will be refunded.

The programs will include:

  • Hands on lab activities
  • Short, interactive lectures
  • Information of future studies
  • Career discussions
  • Meeting with current university students
  • Visit to a local scientific site
