Course Description

Students have opportunities to develop knowledge, understanding and skills individually and collaboratively to make, perform and appreciate dramatic and theatrical works. Students take on roles as a means of exploring both familiar and unfamiliar aspects of their world while exploring the ways people react and respond to different situations, issues and ideas.

What will students learn about?

Students will learn about different dramatic forms and performance styles. These will largely be determined by the interests of class members. Examples may include theatre games, improvisation, scripted drama, mime, mask, comedy, melodrama, commedia dell’arte, physical theatre, absurdism, expressionism, surrealism, realism, verbatim theatre and documentary drama. Students learn about the key elements of drama, as well as the impact of design and production elements.

What will students learn to do?

Students will gain confidence in expressing themselves and skills in working collaboratively with others to make, perform and appreciate dramatic and theatrical works. They devise and enact dramas using both scripted and unscripted material. Students use acting and performance techniques to express meaning to an audience. They will experiment with technical elements, such as lighting, sound and other production effects, to enhance their performance work. Students learn to reflect on and analyse their own work and that of others, evaluating the contribution of drama and theatre to enriching our society.
