Course Description 

Photographic and Digital Media allows students to expand their skill sets in taking and appreciating the visual image, either in a photograph format or through video. Students will be able to investigate the evolution of the photograph & video, from film cameras & darkroom processes, to the instant still and moving digital images. 

Students learn new skills from creating images in the darkroom, to enhancing their digital photographs using programs such as Photoshop. Video making and using a variety of App programs are also incorporated into the course. Students can explore a variety of photographers and animators to assist their own photography making.  

Students will investigate Photographic and Digital Media through practical and theory tasks, with the emphasis being placed on the practical component of the course.

Future career opportunities in Photographic and Digital Media are many and varied, for example photographers, designers, filmmakers, videographers, digital artists and animators.

 

What will students learn about?

Students learn how to create compositionally and aesthetically pleasing images, learning a variety of new skills and techniques using film & digital cameras, video and mobile phones. 

They will gain confidence in taking photographs and interacting with other people in a variety of environments.

Students will have the opportunity to strengthen their practical skills and knowledge of Photography by:-

  • Excursions to local and city Art Galleries
  • Attend tailored photography workshop
  • Off-site photoshoots
  • Guest Photography speakers
  • Exhibition of own images - College library and the annual ‘Creative Showcase’
  • Photography Competitions- locally and nationally

What will students learn to do?

Students learn to make photographic and digital media works using a range of materials and techniques to make creative photographs and videos.

  • Create their own compositionally sound digital images
  • Use the program Photoshop to enhance their images
  • Develop their own film to make black & white photographs, as well as creating unique Photogram images using the darkroom facilities.
  • Manipulate images- both manually and digitally by using a variety of applications
  • Use of new technology in image-making - iPhones, lomography, scanners, instamatic, cameras etc.
  • Create video and time-based artworks
  • Document their photographs, ideas and all relevant information in their own Photographic and Digital Media Diary to assist their own photography practice

Please note:-

  • Students are provided with SLR film cameras, film and darkroom paper
  • Digital paper is provided for the printing of competition photographs
  • While it is not mandatory, students are encouraged to access their own SLR Digital camera - if this is not possible the College has a set of digital cameras that are available for loan.
  • Mobile phone for taking images
