Music

Course Description

In the Music elective course, students have opportunities to further develop their musical abilities and potential. The Music course gives students the opportunity to perform with other students who have a diverse range of musical interests and skills. It provides opportunities for students to engage in a range of increasingly sophisticated musical experiences, developing an understanding of how composers have worked with and manipulated musical concepts.

What will students learn about?

Students will learn about the concepts of music (duration/rhythm, pitch, dynamics and expressive techniques, tone colour and structure) through performance, composing and listening, within the context of a range of styles, periods and genres. They are required to develop further knowledge, understanding and skills through the study of a compulsory topic (Australian Music) and additional topics covering a range of musical styles and genres.

What will students learn to do?

Students will develop knowledge, understanding and skills in three key areas:

  • Performance - Students perform a range of repertoire characteristic of the topics they have studied. They engage in group music-making and are increasingly able to perform repertoire as a solo performer, or take roles within group performances.
  • Composition - Students use improvisation, traditional notation and composition software and applications to explore and construct musical compositions. They explore the capability of instruments and ways to manipulate musical concepts.
  • Listening - Students aurally analyse and evaluate the repertoire studied. They engage in discussion of style with an awareness of social, cultural and historical contexts.
