From the History Department

Last Wednesday, all Year 10 History students were very fortunate to hear the presentation from Tom Fleming. Tom’s story of being a child survivor of the Holocaust is a remarkable one. He has kindly told of his experiences for the past four years at St Pius where he now has four grandsons attending.

Tom was one of only 123 child survivors of the Terezin Camp in Czechoslovakia when it was liberated in 1945. His memories of being there with his pregnant mother include many lessons about bravery and dealing with unimaginable adversity. Tom’s story can be read in his book “Lolli’s Apples”. He has donated several copies of this to our library and Year 10 students are encouraged to read this confronting but positive book as they come to an end of their study of the Holocaust.

Thanks again to Tom for generously giving his time to relive these experiences from 75 years ago. Thanks also to Mrs Keighery for hosting this event in the library which was so appropriately set up for Tom. Well done to the Year 10 students who showed so much respect and asked Tom several thoughtful questions. Finally, thank you to the Year 10 History teachers who have taught this sensitive topic so well.

French Holiday Workshops

Bonjour Parents,

I have received the email below advertising some French holiday workshops suitable for Year 11 and Year 12 students. I thought that I would pass this on to you in case you wanted to enrol your son for the upcoming holidays (Year 11 and Year 12) or the January holidays (Year 11). It could be a great opportunity to practise their French skills and interact with other French-speaking peers from the Sydney area.

Merci!

Mrs Sarah McCormack - French Teacher
