Acting is not about being someone different.
It's finding the similarity in what is apparently
different, then finding myself in there.
- Meryl Streep
East Side Story: East Berlin. Early 1960s. The newly built wall starts to divide more than a nation. It divides a small family who are trying to make ends meet and keep their family together…
Timothy McLachlan: James from Blackout by Davey Anderson
What is growing up without a role-model like? It certainly shouldn’t include waking up “disoriented” in a prison cell. Somewhere in Glasgow, James has a journey of self-discovery and reflection as he travels through his memories to piece together how and why he is in a prison cell being accused of attempted murder.
John-Paul Shahady: Henry from Two Scoops or One? By John-Paul Shahady & Tom Mesker
A man is caught in a perpetual cycle of denial. After a horrendous brain injury, Henry’s brain re-sets to a happy time when he worked at a local diner and regularly asked, “Two scoops or one?”
Ms Penny Lindley - Drama Teacher
“No one will know how long it took, but everyone
will know how good it sounds.”

‘Cause Now You’re Singing with a Choir: Music Unites at Our Lady of Dolours Youth Mass
Our community was spiritually energised by the Youth Mass held last Sunday September 22. Students from St Pius X College, Mercy Catholic College and Our Lady of Dolours Primary School formed a combined choir to sing parts of the mass and hymns. We thank everyone involved for making our prayers and music so divine. Please join us for our next combined Youth Masses on Sunday October 27 and Sunday November 24, 5.15pm.

Elective Musicians Enjoy an Elgar Feast at the Opera House
With a program including Elgar’s “Cello Concerto” and “Enigma Variations”, our elective music students were spoilt by their final Meet the Music Concert last Wednesday. While today Elgar is one of the best-known British composers, his musical career was not straightforward. Being a self-taught composer of Roman Catholic faith (in Protestant Britain), Elgar was never certain that he would make it as a composer. At times Elgar resorted to teaching music to support himself financially. It was not until his forties, that Elgar’s “Enigma Variations” were received with success. He soon became popular in Britain and Europe. Please watch the SSO and soloist Andreas Brantelid, under the direction of conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy, performing Elgar’s Cello Concerto. The entire concert was live streamed from the Sydney Opera House (Ctrl+Click to follow the link):
Performing Arts Parents’ Association: Join Our Team in 2020
We cordially invite parents and friends of the College to join our Performing Arts Parents’ Association in 2020. We have various positions to fill. Being in this wonderful group involves just one meeting per term and support for the planning of our major concerts. The only prerequisite for membership is the desire to help our St Pius students flourish. Our next PAPA meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 30 at 7pm in the College Band Room. All welcome, supper provided.
Auditions for 2020: A Chance to Share Learning
Our sincere thanks to Mr Primrose-Heaney, Mrs Talati, Mr Sismey, Mr Dollin and Mr Power on their support of our recent ensemble auditions. Our staff have enjoyed hearing boys perform individually. We look forward to ensuring that the transition of students between ensembles is smooth and equitable. Well done to every boy who has taken up the opportunity to share their learning in our recent auditions.
Should your son have missed his time slot due to a clash with other commitments, please send him to the Performing Arts office to discuss.
Performing Arts Calendar as @ September 25
Happy Holidays: What’s On?
We wish all Pius families a safe and happy holiday. There is a great deal of terrific live theatre on at present. “West Side Story” (inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet) is playing at the Opera House, the Glen St Theatre is staging a production of Roald Dahl’s “Revolting Rhymes”, the Capital Theatre, Haymarket is showing the Broadway musical, “Chicago” and flamenco guitarist Paco Peña Esencias is playing at City Recital Hall.
We hope everyone takes the time to explore, relax and renew.
