YEAR FIVE NEWS

This term continues to be full of fun and exciting learning experiences for the Year Fives.

In Religious Education, the students have explored how Jesus showed good human qualities and gave Catholics the Eucharist to enable them to live good lives. The children have learnt about the connections between Jesus celebrating the Last Supper at Passover and how Catholic’s celebrate the Eucharist today at Mass. They also discovered the relevance of the Sacrament of the Eucharist as a fulfilment of God’s promise of Salvation.

The children will now move onto focusing on the communities they belong to and encounter. They will also explore the laws of the Church created by God and the Ten Commandments. The children will examine the two great commandments of Jesus, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, with all your strength and all your mind’ and ‘You must love your neighbour as yourself’. The children will also continue to wonder at the talents and good qualities that are within them, leading them to wonder about God who created these qualities.

In English, the children continue to focus on ways to better comprehend texts and use a variety of strategies to interpret and understand the message and intent of the author. They have read about significant Australians who have shaped the colonies during their reading activities.  ‘Shaping a Colony’ is the focus for the Year Five integrated studies unit and the children will be producing a biography on an individual from the 1800s such as; John Septimus Roe, James Stirling or Caroline Chisholm. The students have been involved in an iTunesU course to direct their learning through this inquiry.

The students continue to learn about the intricacies of the English language. In writing, the children have continued to develop their creative writing skills through narratives and persuasive texts and they will also write information reports and biographies on their historical learning.

In Mathematics, the children have continued to build on their understanding of the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Throughout the term, they have had several opportunities to focus on financial management and budgeting.  The children have been encouraged to keep up with the set tasks on Mathletics that support and facilitate the consolidation of their learning in mathematics. A weekly focus on problem solving strategies will continue throughout this term. These sessions have supported the notion that, “there is no one way” to solve a problem. trial and error, drawings and diagrams, tables and charts, are just a few examples.

During Art, the children have explored artworks from various artists and investigated the different approaches used to communicate ideas, beliefs and opinions. They have developed and applied techniques and processes when making their artwork and have reflected on this process.

This term in Health, with Mrs Grabski, the children have been learning about being healthy, safe and active. They have looked at how their identities are influenced by people and places and have investigated different community resources and ways to seek help regarding their health, safety and wellbeing. They will plan and practise strategies to promote health, safety and wellbeing, focusing on drugs and what effects alcohol can have on the body.

The Year Five students have been learning about coding with Miss Phoebe in the iLab this term. Coding is an essential skill that teaches the students how to solve problems and work together in creative ways.  The Year Fives have been completing a mix of unplugged (not using a device) and plugged in activities to build up their basic programming vocabulary. They have begun by learning about simple commands, functions and loops and learn how to write code using the app, Swift Playgrounds.

YEAR THREE EXCURSION TO BROWNES

On Wednesday the Year Threes went on an excursion to Brownes Dairy. It was lots of fun! When we arrived there met Farmer Damian and Eloise. We ate our lunch before watching a movie. The movie explained how milk travels from a farm to our fridge. Then we were given safety vests to put on because we were about to enter the factory. 3W was given yellow vests to wear and 3W was given orange ones.

Farmer Damian walked us outside and we met a real live cow called Jersey! She doesn’t live at Brownes- she was just visiting because she normally lives on Farmer Damian’s farm. We then entered the factory where we walked down a very long walkway before we can to a top secret door. The door was top secret because not even Brownes employees are allowed in there!

Behind the door was a big window. Behind the window were robots which put the milk into bottles. The reason why Brownes uses robots instead of humans is because robots are so much stronger. We also saw a machine putting milk lids onto them. It was very cool to see the machine also putting the stickers onto the bottles- they were all the right way up!

Eloise then took us for the next part of the tour. She led us to the kitchen. When we got to the kitchen we met a woman called Kristy. Kristy allowed us to try traditional plain yoghurt and it was very bitter and sour. Kristy then let us make some cheese! We used vinegar and hot skim milk which made the cheese. We learnt lots about the transformation of liquids with Kristy!

After we went to the factory we finally got to milk Jersey the cow. Some of us were a bit scared to milk Jersey but it was actually very fun and she was a lovely cow.

Finally it was time to journey back to school. On the bus we played ‘Sleeping Tigers’ which was lots of fun! When we arrived back to school, our beautiful teachers had a surprise for us. Brownes had sent us a special treat of a bottle of milk each! The vanilla milk was delicious. We all wish that when we are in Year Four we can go back to Brownes!

PERFORMING ARTS NEWS

Infant Jesus truly celebrated the spirit of “great things” this week as the curtain finally came down upon the 2017 Performing Arts Festival. Tuesday was a wild day filled with a flurry of performances from the Year 4 Choir and the Infant Jesus Choir as they  performed at a special concert at MyVista Aged Homes and then at the Performing Arts Festival for the final time.

The children performed at a high standard and they received encouraging comments from their adjudicator, who thoroughly enjoyed the energetic vibrance of the Year 4 Choir and loved the harmonies and song selection of the Infant Jesus Choir.

Later that night the Infant Jesus Concert Band performed at Newman College in the Marist Auditorium. It was a sensational performance with outstanding musicianship demonstrated. The children made a lasting impression upon the audience who were taken with their mature sound and stage presence. They received an extremely positive report that reflected the hard work of both Mrs LeGoueff and the Band children.

Everyone involved in the Festival this year is to be congratulated on their commitment to the Music Programme. They are to be commended for their dedication in striving for excellence in the pursuit of bettering their musical abilities and for showing that with hard work, perseverance and love of music “the sky is the limit!”

Well done to all the Performers!

INFANT JESUS SCHOOL IS THE BEST!

I believe that Infant Jesus School is the best.  Firstly, Infant Jesus School is Catholic. They treat everyone the same and believe that everyone is part of God's family.  They also pray to God, Jesus and everybody that is in need.  Secondly, all of the classrooms are bright and colourful, but that's not all.  Every time you walk into a classroom there are many amazing places to sit.  The classroom has many things on display like posters, typing, and

  • Sign out and return the Lanyard

All visitors to the school must sign in i.e. Parents dropping things off, Parents picking up students, Volunteers helping Canteen or Class, Students arriving late,  Maintenance workers etc.

PROLONGED ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL OF A STUDENT DURING SCHOOL TERM

There is an approval procedure that must be followed if you are taking your children out of school for several days.

  • Letter or email must be sent to the Principal and Teacher advising the school of the circumstances of the absence.
  • School then formally approves the absence with a letter sent to Parents.

It is important to note that the Education Act states that all children need to be at school at all times during the school year.

Prolonged absences should only be taken if it is essential for illness, pastoral and family reasons. In this instance it is a requirement that parents provide a valid explanation, in writing, for children’s

non-attendance at school.

It is also important to note that prolonged absence from school will impact on children’s learning.
