Debating Experience
On 12 September, our Year 9 debating team went head to head against Glen Waverley in the octo-finals debate. The topic of discussion was ‘that we should subsidise tickets to women’s sporting events’, which we were given negative. Though our provided stance often proved to be a challenge, we sat down as a team with our Year 12 mentor, Prachi, and prepared our speeches through lunchtime meetings. Our collaboration was essential in the process of articulating persuasive and comprehensive arguments supporting our side. Thus, we also utilized our resources efficiently, in order to create a well prepared and consistent presentation for the adjudicator.
As the venue for the debate was located in Brighton East, we all set off in the afternoon to arrive at St. Leonard’s College by 8.00pm. Climbing up the numerous stairs, a mix of excitement and fear kicked in, however, we did not let those emotions get in the way of our performance. As the adjudicator called upon our first speaker, the octo-finals officially began, and the scratching of pens could be heard from both sides. Similarly, the cycle repeated until all the speakers has presented their case. As each speaker stood and presented our case, it also allowed us to take notes on areas of improvement. Additionally, the final adjudication provided a chance for us to receive an in-depth response to our case, as well as personal performance. Even though our team lost by a mere 2 points, we were all grateful for the opportunity that was provided to us and taught us various techniques for future debates.
The adrenaline rush that debating provides, as well as the inclusive and collaborative nature are all prompts to join. The octo-finals provided us with a new experience that we can use to further develop our skills and hopefully win the finals next year!
