We made it to the Nationals!!!!

On 21 October 2019, Nossal Middle Years Chess Team competed in the State Chess tournament and successfully secured a place in the national tournament. Our team, which comprised of Sayam Mehta, Aditya Gautam Bhasker, Arnav Chokka, Ze En Lim, Joel Koay and Jireh Yi Loh, played excellently and permeated a vibrant environment in the State tournament.  Our successful teamwork led us to an eminent place in the state level chess tournament. We are immensely proud of this achievement, and this high echelon, which we acclaim, has only prompted us to practice even harder.

Our recently recruited player, Arnav Chokka, played exceptionally well in his first Chess tournament. Sayam Mehta, the Middle Years Chess team’s captain, displayed an outstanding performance in the state Chess tournament, placing 11th on the leaderboard, the quintessence of proficiency. Aditya Gautam Bhasker, who is adept at Chess endgames and is the paradigm of wisdom in Chess, had also performed remarkably.

Jireh Yi Loh and Joel Koay, the very composed ones, dealt with their opponents by remaining calm, hence, imbuing a positive aura. Ze En Lim, the epitome of complexity, played through his special ways. Ultimately, all our performances and the ‘united sense of purpose’, uplifted our prestige. With this echelon, we are all excited to prepare for the Nationals Chess tournament.

NHS Exams: Years 9 - 11

Parents are likely already aware that the after the bulk of the VCAA examinations have been undertaken, the Nossal internal examination period will begin. Examinations for students in Years 10 & 11 will begin on Friday 15th November and will continue until Friday 22nd November. Examinations for students in Year 9 will not begin until Wednesday 20th November and will then carry on concurrently with the senior exams until Friday 22nd November. They will have normal classes until their examination period begins.

A more detailed outline of the examinations will appear in the newsletter immediately preceding the first examination, but I will take this opportunity to remind parents that, as with the VCAA examinations, during the examination period formal classes are cancelled and students are only expected at school during their scheduled exams (though they are welcome to study at school for the rest of the time). The examinations are compulsory for all students in Years 9 - 11. Students who are absent due to illness will need to provide a medical certificate. The only exception is for students whose VCAA exams fall on the same day as their NHS exam. These students are authorised to be absent from their NHS exams, and a school process exists to ensure that they can still take advantage of the opportunity for summative feedback which the examinations represent.
