The time had arrived. The tables were set. It was time to battle. There were prizes and glory at stake. The contestants were both nervous and excited. This day’s contest required feats of concentration and strategy. But this was no physical battle. This was Chess, a battle of the minds.

On September 9, the Nossal High School Chess Team travelled to Brighton Grammar to face some of the toughest players in the State. This was the State Finals, so there was no time to fool around. Throughout the nine rounds of Chess, we struggled as we fought against competitors from 21 schools across Victoria.

And our work was not without reward. Out of nine games each our scores were:

  • 5 wins for Tom Do
  • 5 wins for Gabriel Ho
  • 5 for Ryan Harker
  • 4½ for Josiah Schuller
  • 4 for Krishnan Gounder

Overall, Nossal High School scored 19½ points, earning 6th place. Because of this, Nossal High School has been granted a spot in the Nationals at the end of the year.

The experience at the tournament was fantastic. We all improved our skills and had a fun time, playing games all day rather than going to school. I can’t wait for another battle at Nationals!
