Wellbeing

Michele Hedley

This term our week of wonder began with the question:

The focus of WOW week was learning how to listen to our body to recognise changes when we are feeling anxious or scared.  The students also discussed the importance of keeping ourselves and others safe; what to do in different situations if we are feeling unsafe and the importance of speaking up when they are concerned about something.  Each student thought of 5 people they could talk to about a problem they may have.  These lessons form part of our school’s response to the Child Safety Standards.  It is very important to discuss with children ways to keep themselves safe both physically and mentally and for all children to understand the importance of sharing any concerns they may have with a trusted adult.

At the beginning of each term we remind our students of our agreed ways that explicitly teach us how to treat others and act responsibly and with respect.  This term we are focussing on ‘Speaking Appropriately’.  We want to reinforce the importance of being polite and using manners.  We also want our students to know the importance of using our words to be kind, to encourage others and to include others. At home this can be reinforced by teaching your children how to speak nicely to their siblings and how to ask for what they want respectfully both within and outside the home.  Parents can look for opportunities to teach their children how to interact appropriately with different people in our community; friends, relatives, teachers and even shop keepers.  As parents we need to be aware that our children copy the way we speak to and about others and it is important to be good role models for our children.

Pressing Pause On Bottle Cap Collection

A huge thank you to everyone that sent in their bottle caps. I have been in contact with the Envision company and they have been overwhelmed by the public’s response to the recent publicity.  The next stage they are working towards is raising enough money to turn all the bottle caps into the prosthetic hands and other disability aides.

As a school community we will be delivering the caps that we have collected but pausing the collections with an intention to restart next year.  Meanwhile, the Social Justice Committee will be considering ways our school community might be able to support this project through raising funds.
