St James and St Joan of Arc Inaugural Family and Football Fun Day

Saturday 1 September 2018

On Saturday 1st September, Brighton Beach Oval played host to the inaugural St James and St Joan of Arc Family and Football Fun Day.

As promised, there truly was something for everyone.  There was a jumping castle and face painting for the kids, BBQ's, Food Trucks, Coffee and Ice Cream for consumption, proud moments for parents as they watched their children play, and then plenty of free entertainment and laughs for the spectators as they watched the school dads try to turn back the clock.

Whilst weather conditions were less than ideal as the chilly wind swept through from the bay, it did not dampen the spirits of competitors but must have clearly been the reason for the errant skill levels.

Whilst supporters could have been easily excused for wanting to stay at home in front of their fires or heaters, their desire to support their friends, school and community saw them flock down in droves - and they were not disappointed.

The Yr 3/4 and Yr 5/6 game were played in great spirit and saw a large number of children involved that had never played football before but were super keen to be involved in the family oriented day.  This was great to see and will hopefully only encourage more students to be involved in the coming years.  Thank you also to Adrian Rowse and Jamie Jowett for coaching those teams on the day and to Marcus Quinn and Austin Vaughn for umpiring in a way that gave all the kids a chance to be involved.

Then came the Dads match, and the opportunity to showcase skills and courage that even had the Richmond CEO turn up to scout for his next pool of premiership hopefuls - and he could not have been disappointed.  Like with the kids games, there were a number of Dads who had either never really played football, or not for a very long time, who put their hands up to support the event and to show their children how important it is to give things a go, to be involved, to have some fun and support the school and parish community.

There were so many highlights and contributions from all players and supporters on the day and I could not even begin to mention them all here.  However, it would be remiss of me not to recount the most memorable one for me, when Steve Williams, after kicking the very first goal of the match, then followed this up later in the game by dancing and pirouetting around 3 St Joan or Arc opponents and looking likely to be the first mature age rookie to be drafted at 50 years of age, only to get dizzy and disorientated and forget to actually kick the ball before he was unluckily dumped right in front of the crowd.  For me, this really encapsulated the day as the crowd and players roared with approval both at the talent displayed and the fun in which the day was about - even Steve couldn't help but chuckle at what had just happened.

Whilst there were no doubt a lot of sore muscles on fathers day, hopefully the Dads were given extra special care and were even more admired by their children for their super efforts.

Thank you to Chris Dodd and Paul Digney for coaching and the massive task of bench rotations and to all of the fantastic boy and girls who enthusiastically ran water to the dads all day.

Whilst I am thanking people, these days do not eventuate and run without the help of many people.  So I would like to give huge thanks to Mel Fuller for organising the BBQ and canteen and those who supported her - Stuart Fuller, Voula and Tony Psirris, Leanne Cox, Mel Storer, Sharyn Cunningham, Mel Harrington, Deb OReilly, Matt Bennett, Sienna and Dakota Cox and Ava Psirris.  I would also like to thank Bakers Delight in Elwood for their very generous donation of the bread for the BBQ and awards for the kids matches.  And thank you also to Denise Wong for all of her help in securing the Food and Ice cream trucks, and to all of those who sold and brought raffle tickets.

Thank you also to Inspiring Vacations and the Richmond Football club who generously donated the amazing prizes for the raffle - a trip for 2 to Japan and a signed Richmond football jumper.

Also a massive thank you to all of those kids and dads who put their hands up to play and to all of the families who came down to support on the day, without you the event would not have been the success that it was.  It is a great thing for our school, our parish and our community and I look forward to continuing to grow and get better and better in years to come.

SCHOOL BANKING

The Commonwealth School Banking program has arrived at St James Catholic Primary School to help our children develop strong financial literacy skills, plus earn some extra benefits for our school.

School Banking Day is every THURSDAY

Students are to bring their yellow bank books in each THURSDAY and put them in the banking bag in their classroom.  The bag will then be collected  by one of our banking volunteers.  Once the banking is processed the banking bag will be sent back to the class for bank books to be returned to students.
