End of Year Music Concert

by Paul Dooley, Arts Curriculum Leader

Tuesday 15 November is the date of the music department’s next big shabang. Starting at 7pm, our larger ensembles such as concert band, stage band, string ensemble, choir, guitar groups, percussion ensembles and more will be performing in the theatre. Come along to enjoy the show and encourage our student musicians as they demonstrate the results of almost a year’s work in their ensembles.

Centenary Art Show

Celebrating 100 years of visual art at Footscray City College, the annual Art Show will be opening on Tuesday 8 November. Held in the Futures Centre from 6pm to 8pm, and until 5pm each day until Thursday 11 November, there will be student work from all year levels featuring a range of media - painting and drawing, photography, 3D, furniture, digital, film and more. Every year this event is a highlight in terms of showing off just how sophisticated and expressive many of our students can be. Refreshments will be available.

Concurrently with the art show opening a short year nine drama production will be be performed in the theatre from 6pm.

VCE Music Performance

Congratulations to our three unit 4 VCE music students, Judd Harley, Reuben Cumming and Madi Peake who all performed on Tuesday October 4 as a final run through of their exam programs only days before repeating each performance for VCAA assessors. The night showed that each of them was thoroughly prepared for their assessments, and for those in the audience who heard them all perform earlier in the year, the progress each had made from hours of practice was evident. Many thanks to the year 11 and 9 students who contributed in the bands for Reuben and Judd who had to prepare a program to demonstrate a variety of styles and performing techniques on guitar in a group context. Madi performed a solo program with a piano accompanist. Her songs were all from musicals featuring a solo female vocalist and she focussed on the techniques to portray character and mood in performance. Given the number of audience members who developed moist eyes during one particular song, I think she hit the mark successfully!
