Feedback from Footscray City
On Tuesday 18th October FCC representatives of the Melbourne Writers Festival Youth Program Advisory Committee, and a few members of our Book Club, met for the second time with Jo Case, the Program Manager of the festival. At the meeting they discussed their recent experience attending the festival on our annual library excursions and gave valuable feedback to Jo about which sessions were the most enjoyable and why. They offered their suggestions about which writers they’d like to see next year and also ideas about themes or topics for talks and workshops. This kind of feedback is very valuable to the MWF organisers and it’s fantastic that our students have the opportunity to have a direct input into the planning of such a large and reputable festival.
Jo also brought with her a bag full of books for the students to take home and read, in exchange for their criticisms and reactions in the form of book reviews to be written once they finish. She has also asked some of the keen students to read an unpublished manuscript from a new author in order to find out what they think. The students jumped at the chance to read something no one else has seen yet and hopefully they will have some great, productive feedback to give the publishers about this new teen Sci-Fi book.
FCC People of Colour Collective
Since people of colour often aren’t being represented positively in society, it’s important that we have a space at Footscray City College where students can have their voices heard, can be visible and to feel valid. The collective meets during Thursday lunchtimes in the library classroom. It is a safe space where people can speak about their experiences and concerns aloud freely. It is also an opportunity for those that are unaware to gain a better understanding of some of the issues and problems faced by people of colour. For any inquiries please make contact with Eaman Mahmoud via mah0011@footscray.vic.edu.au
Guest speaker
On Friday 28th October, our People of Colour collective will be hosting a discussion with Nayuka Gorrie during lunchtime in the library. Nayuka is an indigenous writer and activist and she is preparing a cultural intelligence module for y lab. She is seeking our students' opinions on what they believe people need to know about race and culture. Everyone is welcome to attend and you can bring your lunch.
