This week we reach the halfway point in the term and hopefully, all boys can look back over their first month at school and be happy with what they have done to this point. For the boarders, this coming weekend is a Boarders’ Free Weekend with a student-free day on Monday. Whilst our dorms will remain open and supervised over the weekend for those who are staying in, many boys will be planning a three-day break away with family or friends. Boarders are able to return to school by 8:00pm on Monday to maximise their time away. It is an expectation that boys who are part of a Marist sporting team meet their commitment and play their game this Saturday. Taking leave for the long weekend is not a reason to let their team down. Parents of boarders are asked to submit leave no later than Thursday so that our Boarding Team can plan ahead knowing the number of boys who will be staying in.
Marist Boarding is hitting the road again this year to visit families and support regional events. Venues such as St George, Moree, Quilpie, Julia Creek and many more are on the itinerary and we look forward to engaging with many present, past and future members of the Marist College Ashgrove community on our travels. Keep an eye out for details of our regional visits as they will be published soon.
Planning is well underway for an event that we are hosting again this year. The South East Queensland Boarders’ Touch Football Tournament will be held at Marist College Ashgrove on Sunday 19 March. We have received tremendous interest from schools keen to participate. After inviting every boarding school in South East Queensland, 90% are coming. It’s looking like there will be 60-70 teams competing on the day in both boys and girls divisions. With a number of schools bringing other boarders to support their teams we will have around 1,000 boarding school students here for this event. It should be a great celebration of boarding in SE Qld and we look forward to hosting this and making it a great experience for all involved.
I hope you are enjoying the new Marist Boarding Instagram page. It is great to share the life our boarding community with photos and videos and hopefully, it serves to connect boys, parents, staff and others. With the boarder’s free weekend around the corner, we loaded up on the recreation front this weekend to keep the boys busy. Friday kicked off with a boarder’s arvo feast and the second round of internal volleyball games for the Years 6-9 boarders. This led to a few games on the oval, a BBQ and a swim with the Somerville boarders joining us for the evening. A group of our loudest and proudest also headed over to Yeronga to support the AFL 1st XVIII in their well-fought win over Ambrose Treacy College.
Saturday saw Round 3 of AIC sport take place against a strong Iona. The Hive headed over to Wynnum for the 1st VI Volleyball game who unfortunately went down after losing a couple of nail-biting sets. Later that afternoon the Years 6-9 boarders and a handful of older boys jumped on a bus to Stuartholme for a colour run and slip-n-slide. The boys had a great time and the Marist and Stuartholme staff took great joy dousing them in chalk dust! See the photos below for a few new hairstyles! We rounded Saturday off with 20 boys heading into Southbank for the new Marvel movie – Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. I struggled with it, but the boys seemed to enjoy themselves which is the main thing!
Our first beach trip of the year was on Sunday with the younger lads heading up to Kings Beach in the morning and the Year 12s coming up in the afternoon for a twilight trip. It’s a cracking spot at Kings and the boys always enjoy these trips. The addition of a few skimboards was also a highlight for many! Another busy week in the books brings us to the halfway point of Term 1.
