Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday occurs the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. It officially ends the season of Epiphany and is the vigil for the starting of Lent. The name "Shrove Tuesday" is derived from the word "shrive", which means to confess and receive absolution. The name denotes a period of cleansing.

Our thanks to the students and staff who supported our Shrove Tuesday “Raising Stacks for Marist Solidarity” pancake stall today.

Ash Wednesday

Throughout the world, Christians gather to mark the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday. This ancient ceremony reminds us that we are here on earth to give blessings and thanks for everything that God has given us, especially the gift of Jesus. Lent is a time of preparing ourselves in prayer, through helping others in need and in challenging our behaviours in our relationship with ourselves and others.

The College will hold an Ash Wednesday liturgy in the Champagnat Centre for the College community. Distribution of Ashes will take place at this time

The Wednesday morning College Community Mass will go ahead tomorrow morning for any member of our College community that wish to join us for Fr Tini’s distribution of the Ashes.

Lenten Fundraising Day

Marist College Ashgrove will launch the 2023 Australian Marist Solidarity Appeal on Wednesday 22 February after our Ash Wednesday liturgy. Friday 24 February will be a FREE DRESS and FUNDRAISING DAY with Food stalls and games during first break.

Australian Marist Solidarity

Australian Marist Solidarity (AMS) works to ensure that all young people have access to educational opportunities.

AMS believe education has the power to eradicate poverty. With your help, we support grassroots movements run by local people, by empowering them to make a change in their community.

Working across Asia and the Pacific, AMS projects focus on providing access to education for vulnerable young people, building facilities for the future to ensure safe spaces for learning, and investing in resilience and readiness to help young people who need a little extra support to thrive in learning environments.

Together, we transform the lives of young people by raising awareness of the power of education, and the funds that make it possible.

Together, we bring hope.

As a Marist community, this is a significant part of our annual Lenten appeal. For further information about AMS please visit the website  Home » Australian Marist Solidarity

Chaplain’s Corner

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent and fills the churches all over the world every year. The ashes of “Ash Wednesday” must be one of the most popular sacramentals in the Church. They remind us of the mortality of the body and the eternity of the soul. The body upon which we lavish so much attention will turn to dust. The soul that we often ignore will live forever. Today is a serious day as it should be. It is not, however, a day of gloom but of hope.

We begin a very powerful season of the Church year, a journey that will take us to Easter in the Church and hopefully in our life as well.

Lent is a time of Christian and Catholic identity because it is something we all do together. Sometimes we see people on the street today with the ashes on their foreheads and never realised that they were Catholic. As the prophet Joel calls the whole community together to seek the Lord, so we are all called to make the spiritual journey to new life in Christ.

Sometimes we put off our renewal as Catholics to the future, a future that never quite comes. St. Paul writes that now is a grace-filled hour. Now is the time for an “extreme makeover,” to reverse destructive choices, half spiritual drift, go back to basics, and refresh our lives in the truth of the Gospel, the grace of the Sacraments and the life of the Church.

In today’s Gospel reading, the Lord points to three ancient pathways for our Lent. There is fasting when we give up certain foods. The effort to give up food makes us realise how trapped we are in the self-gratification of a consumer culture. Our economy is fuelled by consumption. Fasting is difficult to start but as it becomes easier, we experience a personal liberation. The practice of almsgiving reminds us that we have a responsibility to others. We are part of a spiritual web. The third path is that of reviving in our life the potential of prayer to unify all the sectors of our life around Christ and establish an open line to God.

The season of Lent is a great inheritance from the past. It probably evokes many memories from our youth. Lent, however, is not about our past but about our future. A serious Lent will help us restore an honesty and clarity about our life and its purpose that we may have forgotten.

Lent is not about our past. It is about our future.

Mary, Our Good Mother, pray for us.

St. Marcellin Champagnat, pray for us.

St. Mary of the Cross, pray for us.

And may we always remember to pray for one another.
