Student Shout-outs

WELL DONE MADELEINE!

College representative for the 2022 Lord Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council.

Last year, Madeleine (Year 11) wasthe Mount Alvernia representative for the Lord Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council. Maddie met with Lord Mayor and the Council’s Youth Development Team throughout the year, along with other like-minded students from across Brisbane, to provide ideas to enhance Council initiatives. In particular, Maddie worked with her peers to propose a solution for increased disability awareness in Brisbane. Maddie spoke highly of this program and has encouraged our Year 10s of 2023 to give it a go, “I highly recommend this to any of you that are interested in working with the council and making Brisbane a better place, especially for young people, or even if you want to increase your confidence and leadership skills … it was probably the best thing I signed up for in 2022”. We are excited to announce our Lord Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council representative for 2023 in the coming weeks.

Comment from Madeleine:

“I highly recommend this to any of you that are interested in working with the council and making Brisbane a better place, especially for young people, or even if you want to increase your confidence and leadership skills … it was probably the best thing I signed up for in 2022”.

CONGRATULATIONS MATILDA!

Recently competed in the following Futsal competitions

U16 & Youth Women’s Division Futsal – NZ

National Club Futsal Championships (NCFC) - SYD

In December Matilda travelled with the Australian futsal team down to New Zealand where she competed in the U16 and Youth women’s division. They competed in a few friendly games across the cities of Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin which ranged with some wins, and a few loses. Matilda spoke about how this trip was a great experience to travel and see sights of New Zealand as well as being able to compete against a different country.

In January of 2023, Matilda travelled down to Sydney with the Youths women team as a goalkeeper where she competed in the National Club Futsal Championships (NCFC). Her team was successful and won most games and ended up making it into the semi-finals where they unfortunately got knocked out in golden goal. Matilda was lucky enough to pick up an All-star position in my age group. She was also selected to travel with the Australian team to play in the Costa Blanca cup for the U19 girls which will be held in Spain of June/July of this year. Well done Matilda, we can't wait to see what you achieve next!

WAY TO GO EMILY!

Emily recently completed a taster course in welding at QLD TAFE.

We asked Emily some questions about why she decided to do this course and some of her key takeaways. It is fantastic to see young women exploring interests in a wide array of fields, well done Emily!

Why welding and metal work?

After experiencing it during the holidays and since I enjoyed it I decided that it was something that I enjoy and would want to go further in.

What was the greatest part of the experience?

Being able to learn the different types of welding as well as being able to create whatever I wanted to with the materials supplied.

What are your thoughts about post school?

My thoughts for post school would be going into trade whether as a fabricator or an engineer.

Is there someone who has inspired you to follow this interest?

My pop inspired me to do welding as I first learnt it with him and he helped me find the course and help with how I weld.
