Canteen News

Hello from the Canteen!

Well busy term 1 is in full swing and flying by. We have been busy from the start, with a big cook up day to start week 1. We are nearly sold out of our homemade pastas already!! … but…  we really need more volunteers! (not just for cooking, there are lots of ways to help)  If you have expressed interest before and not heard from us, please pop into the office and check if we have your details. If not please ask for a new volunteer pack. See below for more details on volunteering.

Cash

We are happy to accept cash but generally don't keep a lot of change. When possible, please don’t send students with notes larger than $10 unless you are ordering lunches for more than one child. Thankyou for your support with this.

Student reminders

All students need to show respect, line up and wait their turn, and use their manners in the canteen. Students with frozen treat vouchers need to make sure they bring them down to the canteen to be able to receive their treat.

Canteen/ menu update

An updated menu for 2023 is linked below. The online QKR! menu is more detailed and shows current availability so please use that to order when possible. Most items have remained for now. A few new things have been added including a plain chicken burger and more pizza varieties. The crispy chicken wrap remains popular so will continue to be available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  As the term goes on, we will continue to assess which items are popular and which are not and changes may be made. We are also looking at our survey results to see where changes can be made. See below for more on the survey. We have a couple of specials in the works! Keep your eyes peeled for a Harmony day Jelly special and an Easter special coming up too.

Stock update

Some old favorites are back in stock! Wedges and garlic bread are available again. After many months waiting, we have Jelly pencils and Ice Monys back too. We have our fingers crossed that we will be able to keep them in stock.

Preschool

Preschool students are welcome to order lunches, drinks and snack foods (unfortunately not frozen treats) however they must use QKR! to order because they do not bring a lunch tray to us in the mornings. If you (parent/carer) need to do a cash order for your preschooler, please visit the canteen in person between 9-9.30am to place the order. If you need help setting up QKR!, come in and see us in the in the canteen or visit the school office. We are all happy to help you do this.  Any lunch orders will be delivered to the preschool at lunchtime by our wonderful team of year 5/6 helpers.

Survey results

We had a good response to the survey, with 54 families responding. We were pleased to see many positive comments and some really thoughtful suggestions. We love the idea of a chips and gravy special and hope that chips will be in better supply next term so this maybe a winter special!

A couple of comments were an easy fix – more cheese on pizzas and thick bread for toasties please. No problem! Both have been implemented already. There were many comments regarding running a 4 day service and a want for the canteen to open Mondays again. Unfortunately, we simply cannot afford to run a 5 day service at the moment. With current student numbers we do not get enough lunch orders to support opening 5 days. Historically Monday has always been our lowest order day. Lunch orders typically increase each day as the week goes on and 72% of survey responses chose Friday as their preferred lunch order day.

There were comments asking for more home cooked weekly specials and family sized meals being available for purchase. We think these are great ideas and would love to have both these options available, but it is simply not possible without more volunteers.

If you missed the survey and wish to give more comments, suggestions or feedback, you can email paravistacanteen@gmail.com or parent.support483@schools.sa.edu.au

Ordering cut-off time

The cut-off time for QKR! orders is 8.50am each morning. Sometimes QKR! gets overloaded and takes some time to process orders, so try not to leave ordering until the last minute. Any cash orders still need to be brought down in the class tray by 9.15am. If you have pre-ordered food on QKR! and your child is going to be absent, please cancel the order by 9.30am or it will be charged for. (Applies to lunch food items only. Drinks, snacks and ice-creams can be held until the next day) To cancel, ring the front office and ask to be transferred to the canteen. Children arriving late wanting to do cash orders will have limited choices and will not be able to order after 10.30am.

Our CANTEEN needs YOU!

We really need volunteers to keep the canteen running.

Volunteers enable us to cook our delicious and healthy meals onsite and keep our pricing LOW. Students also love to see their families being involved in the school community. We welcome mums, dads, grandparents, carers etc. - no experience is necessary. The canteen supervisor will guide you through the morning with preparation of lunches, bulk cooking or even cleaning. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The canteen operates 4 days per week – Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Our volunteer shifts are from 9.00am until Midday (once lunches have been distributed).  It doesn’t need to be every week; just times that suit your schedule!

A Working with Children Check is required but easily obtained and you also must complete a Volunteer Induction course online (the school will assist you with this). If you are able to give the canteen some of your time, please see Karran or Michelle at the canteen or email parent.support483@schools.sa.edu.au.
