Mathematics & STEM
STEM in Year 3 and Year 4
The students in Year 3 and Year 4 are learning about STEM and the engineering design process of Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve and Share. The classes worked together in small groups to solve a problem that was put to them.
The problem was set: Mrs Conway was running late for work and tripped. She dropped everything in her hands down a grated drain; her phone, work keys, car keys and a glasses case. Some children walked past (them!) and stopped to help. They could only use items they found (a select few items given to them) to create a contraption to try and get the dropped items out of the drain…in just 15 minutes!
The children worked hard in their groups following the steps of the design process. Some ideas were more successful than others. We were thrilled to see the team work, the discussions and trial and error and suggestions for future adjustments to make their design better.
Enjoy some photos of the challenge!
STEM Club
Today in STEM Club we built greenhouses for the Tilley Yard and planted seeds so we can grow some new vegetables and herbs. The students worked together to put each piece of the greenhouse together and loved seeing the final product that they had made. They also thought about what seeds were the best to plant at this time of year and carefully labelled each pot.
