Dear parents and Guardians,

Thank you for all your support in helping us to teach our students about acceptance and not using beliefs or difference to exclude others.  We still have a little more learning to do, however we have seen a big improvement in students being inclusive in the school grounds and in classes.

Our school community is fantastic at partnering together to keep our kids safe and to help them to navigate this world and community we live in. So today I want to talk to you about cyber safety.

We all teach our kids about staying safe, saying “stay where I can see you, don’t go too far” when we are out and about in the area.  We need to do the same in our homes with social media.

All social media eg. snapchat, discord, TikTok have a minimum age of 13 to join.  This means none of our primary school children should have an account or access to these platforms.

Sharing of images or videos that could be embarrassing or humiliating for the other person is against the law.  Spreading rumours about someone or abusing someone online or in person is bullying behaviour.

Like any parenting we do, our job is to help our kids if they are struggling, or they make a mistake.  So, lets partner together to help our kids learn to be safe online.

If your child experiences rumours, swearing, threats online you can report this to police and to Office of the E-Safety Commissioner.  https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents

This is happening while the kids are out of school and so it is really important that you monitor their online activity.   If behaviours spill over to school, we will be supporting you to take this action as well as the following up with consequences appropriate to the behaviour shown at school.  Any child using their phone to video another person, will be banned from bringing their phone to school as per Ministerial directives and the DE mobile phone policy.

I wanted to talk to you about this today because we all need to be aware of the challenges our kids face so that they can enjoy this amazing technology, be safe, but also be aware of the law in this area so that they don’t get entangled in severe consequences as they get older.  It is also so important to you and to me that in this world whether we are in person or online that we are inclusive and kind.

Regards Teresa
