Home Reading

Your role as an advocate for your child’s reading success cannot be overestimated. It can have a massive impact on their attitude towards reading. The joy of regularly sharing a book with someone who cares sets the foundation for their reading success, and ensures that reading is given the priority it deserves.

Your son or daughter will soon start bringing home reading material from school. They will be provided with a blue reading bag to carry their books to and from school and a reading diary to record the books they have read. Reading bags are expected to be brought back to school each day so that classroom teachers can keep track of books read, and children can change books when needed.

We encourage you to support the school and teachers in home reading procedures by:

  • Scheduling a regular reading time in a relaxed environment.
  • Aiming to read to or with your child daily.
  • Signing the reading diary daily and communicating any necessary information to the teacher in the diary.
  • Discuss the book with your child to deepen their understanding of what they have read.
  • Encouraging your child when they have made a mistake and seeing mistakes made as a good try and part of the learning journey.
  • Discussing any concerns with your child’s teacher.

I appreciate your support.
