Grade 1/2 News

Term 2, Week 6

Reminders:

  • Big Write Talk Homework: Each fortnight students will bring home 'Talk homework' this is a stimulus for the writing they will complete on the Thursday of the week it is sent home. We encourage families to complete this task with their child/ren as the talking before writing is hugely beneficial to your child's writing. Thank you to those families who complete this each fortnight!

What we have been up to..

Problem-Solving:

Students have been putting their problem solving skills into practice over the past two terms. At times it has meant getting a little bit out of their comfort zone, to work on perseverance, determination and resilience!

Students have experienced what is known as 'productive struggle' where they are finding things a little tricky until they come up with an appropriate strategy to assist in solving the problem.

Last week students were given the following problem and clues, 'I am thinking of two numbers. What might my two numbers be?' Each number is on a 100's chart, one number has a four in it and one number is 16 more than the other number. Students chose to work either independently or with a partner. It was terrific to see all the different combinations they could come up with!

Students also recently learnt about the seasons. We had read book during literacy activities which showed a tree growing through the seasons, we then looked at the seasons in maths as a measurement of time.

Interests and Hobbies Casual Dress Day:

Last Friday students dressed up as something they are interested in or a hobby they enjoy. It was a great way to share our different interests and hobbies as a class and to learn more about each other. Thank you to the many families who made a gold coin donation to support our latest Student Representative Council (SRC) project!

Tennis:

The students have had an awesome time participating in tennis clinics as part of their PE lesson.

Open Day:

Thank you to the many parents and family members who were able to join us for our Open Day activities. It is always exciting for us to have special visitors to join us in the classroom!

Learning in Weeks 7 & 8

Mathematics:

In week 7, Mathematics lessons will continue to focus on efficient addition strategies such as doubling, counting on, bridging the ten and tens partners. We will also the explore the connection between addition and subtraction.

Our week 8 lessons will focus on using analogue and digital clocks to tell the time.

English:

In Reading lessons students will be learning how to 'back up and re-read' when meaning breaks down. Students will also be practising making connections, exploring new vocabulary and using their prior knowledge to support their understanding of different texts.

Our focus phonemes will be ou (as in cloud) and oo (as in boot). Students will practise learning words such as out, now, house, food and soon, which match with our focus sounds.

During Writing lessons, students will continue to focus on learning the features and structure of procedural texts, before producing there own piece of writing.
