Term One in Literacy

The launch of a new year is a busy time in schools as class teachers focus on getting to know their new students both socially and academically.

Once term has started, as literacy coaches, we work closely with staff to support their literacy programs.

To date, this has involved

  • A large investment in updating our Guided Reading resources (used from Foundation to Year 4) to ensure the book sets we use to teach reading are appealing, engaging and clearly set out for students
  • The purchase of a set of classroom dictionaries for Year 2
  • Training our newest literacy helpers, who provide valuable support for Literacy programs in Foundation and Year 1
  • Establishing support programs for students identified as needing assistance through our Levelled Literacy Intervention Program (LLI) in Years 1-4.
  • Completing more detailed assessments for individual students with specific literacy needs

As a staff, we have also looked at data to identify patterns of growth in our students from F-2, and 3-6 to discuss and reflect on common areas of strength and to identify areas of focus.

We look forward to continuing our work as Literacy coaches as the year progresses.
