Forensics Excursion at GTAC
The Year 10 Science students attended a Forensics excursion at GTAC at the start of Term 2 to enhance their knowledge of DNA and Genetics, which they learned in Term 1, and enrich their scientific skills.
During the excursion, the students used blood typing and DNA profiling to solve a fictional crime. In the highly interactive GTAC environment, students:
- utilised models to explore DNA structure and function as well as the repeated sequences of DNA inherited by individuals
- worked in small groups guided by scientist mentors, young practicing scientists who engage students and impart an enthusiasm for science
- understood and applied knowledge of the inheritance of blood type to perform blood analysis
- utilised research-grade equipment to perform gel electrophoresis and constructed DNA profiles to identify a prime suspect
