What's Been Happening!

JUNIOR SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL

BY ALLYSSA CALLOW (JUNIOR PE CO-ORDINATOR)

Dark clouds loomed with the threat of rain and storms but the brave Junior students pushed on forward to their House Swimming Carnival with excited anticipation. The day began with our 3/4 students challenging themselves to swim a full length of the 33m pool in freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. It was incredible to see how many students chose to enter each event. These students have had severely limited access to swimming lessons over the past 2 years but it didn’t stop them from getting in, having a go and pushing through to the end.

There was much excitement in the air as our Year 1/2s arrived. This was the first swimming carnival for the Year 1s and it was so rewarding to see the joy and excitement on their faces as they walked into the atmosphere of the carnival. The students completed an array of fun and challenging novelty events; a ‘noodle race’, a ‘hoop obstacle course’, a ‘boogie-board relay' and a fun-filled ‘fill the bucket’ challenge. There was much laughter and many smiles.

A real highlight for me was working with the Year 12 VCAL students. They worked like a well oiled machine setting up gazebos, timing and scoring the events, and running fun games outside the pool for the non-swimming Year 3/4s. The most wonderful part was seeing so many of these students get into a rather chilly pool (for over an hour!) and gently help, encourage and support our junior students through the novelty events.  Seeing this connection and service from students at the top end of the school to some of the youngest in our school was very special. Thank you so much!

In the end, the weather was perfect; a lovely and warm day. Those clouds promising storms kept the sun glare away and held off pouring their rain until the end of the day. What a blessing from our God!

BYE BYE SUMMER - BOOM DAY!

Last Thursday was a very colourful time at BHCS - we enjoyed our first BOOM Day for 2022 with the theme of Summer Fun - Loud Shirt Day!

We certainly had many moments of 'Bringing On Optimistic Moments' together. Sandcastle competitions, water Games, zooper-doopers, and an ultimate frisbee contest between our school Houses.

So much fun.

So much colour.

Farewell Summer - you were fun!

Congratulation to 5/6LW who won the class photo competition and 5/6JN who came a very close second. We love your creativity!

YEAR 10 MOCK INTERVIEWS

BY MICHELLE VISSER & CHAUNTELLE WOLFAARDT (CAREERS DEPARTMENT)

Our Year 10 students finished up their World of Work unit with a mock job interviews on Wednesday.

The students had been researching criteria for a potential future job they chose on SEEK. They then responded by preparing a corresponding resume and cover letter.  During class we have discussed what employers are looking for, and resumes do's and don'ts.  We role-played both appropriate interview techniques, and also what not to do!

Wednesday morning the students arrived at school appropriately nervous and dressed for the occasion.  We welcomed 15 experienced volunteer Interviewers who generously gave of their time and expertise to put our students through their paces. They took time to encourage our students and also pass on very valuable feedback, both verbal and written, that the students can now reflect on.

Our hope is that this interview experience will improve their confidence and skills in landing their first job.

The feedback from the interviewing team was that our students were well prepared and respectful. They took the morning seriously and were keen to land the job.

Well done to the Year 10 cohort and a huge thanks to all the volunteer Interviewers who were all so wonderful with our students.
