Year 7 Drama

In Drama, I have had an AMAZING time doing all the exciting activities so far. I loved the first session because we got given a script and had to perform it to our class and the character style and actions were all up to us. And then we played a game that is now one of my favourite games, it is called park bench. It is where one person sits on the bench and the other person has to come over and make them really uncomfortable, but they couldn't touch the person on the bench. And our last season was my favourite when we made up some characters and a scenario and we performed it to the class.

Year 7 Science

In Science, we got our bunsen burner licence. It was very scary to light it and open the air hole. Once the bunsen burner was lit we had to test the difference between the blue flame and the yellow flame (safety flame). We were in a group together and we think we did an amazing job, even though it was a little scary. It was really fun and we would love to do it again.

Year 7 Enhancement Program

Science/Maths

This term has seen the enhancement group familiarise themselves with laboratory protocols and how to safely conduct experiments. The students have investigated colour change, bubbles and have also successfully gained their Bunsen burner licenses. This has allowed them to gain experience working with different kinds of lab equipment and allowed them to demonstrate a strong sense of community working safely in a team. This week they will be investigating if sugar dissolves faster in hot or cold water and will be conducting their first full student-lead scientific investigation next week! This will lead to their CAT for the topic, which will require them to design and conduct an experiment to test the height of bouncing balls.

English

Year 7 English students in the enhancement class have been studying a text called ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabret’. The text is historical fiction and includes a historical figure as one of the main characters - Georges Meiles. Meiles was one of the first filmmakers and released his revolutionary film ‘A Trip to the Moon’ in 1902. Enhancement students have watched this 15-minute masterpiece and are writing a movie review on the film using persuasive techniques. Students will also be writing a letter to one of Meiles’ relatives and sending both the letter and review to this relative in France. September marks the film’s 120th anniversary. Vive le film!

Year 8 Enhancement Program

Humanities

Over the duration of this term, the enhancement groups have been studying landscapes and landforms. This area of study has focused closely on mountains and volcanoes.

This week the 8A and 8B classes completed their White Island News Report. This involved the students working in groups to create a news report on the 2019 eruption. The teams work collaboratively to demonstrate their understanding of the geomorphic processes that cause volcanoes and eruptions.

Their presentations were engaging, used appropriate terminology and showed a detailed understanding of the event. Well done to both classes!

Next week we are all looking forward to making playdough volcanoes and seeing if we can make them erupt by mixing bicarb soda and vinegar together.
