CELEBRATING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE@CSPS

Remote and Flexible Learning 6.0

As we head into another period of remote and flexible learning please remember to check in with your child and keep the classroom teacher informed of any questions you may have.

Each sub school will have dedicated times that a teacher will be available each day for a chat. This time is often about catching up, providing help and enjoyment - through playing of games and some well being activities. Please encourage your child to log onto these sessions and see some friendly faces. Google Meet links will be provided on Seesaw.

CONGRATULATIONS to the 20 students from year 3-6 that participated in the AMC on Wednesday 4th Aug.

Teaching and Learning of fractions

Year 5 & 6 are focusing on the learning of Fractions. Student feedback in this area was very fixed. Most students think fractions are hard and say they aren't very good at it. So how do we tackle "fixed mindsets" about fractions? We give students a piece of string!

Learning intention of this lesson was to: understand that fractions are EQUAL PARTS OF A WHOLE that can be shared.

Success is when: you use strategies like division and fractions that we know.

Task: Find 2/5 of your string.

Questions: How do you know that is 2/5? What strategy did you use to solve this? Can you find 2/6?

Cooperative Learning:  Students had so much fun using different lengths of string (number lines) to find fractions. This changed fixed mindsets to a mindset of curiosity and had students sharing and collaborating ideas to solve a problem. Using practical and visual aids is the best way to get conceptual understanding in maths.
