Primary News

Mr Liam Beatty

Dear Primary Parents and Guardians,

The Primary School has been a hive of activity this past week as we celebrate Book Week and share our love of literature. The theme this year is Old Worlds. New Worlds. Other Worlds. My many thanks to the Primary Library staff, Meaghan Round and Robyn Brown for all their work in ensuring our boys have been given the opportunity to engage in this special week. This morning we had a visit from author, Adam Francis and each day our Book Fair will run in the Library, presenting a great opportunity for our boys to purchase books from the range that has been purposefully curated for them. I am very much looking forward to dressing up and seeing all the costumes at our Book Week Parade this coming Thursday morning.

Last Wednesday there was excitement in the air as the entire city of Brisbane eagerly awaited its announcement as the host city for the 2032 Olympic Games. As part of the celebrations, we were fortunate enough to have our Primary School Leaders represent the College with pride at a special breakfast in King George Square. The boys did a great job and showed maturity beyond their years as they were interviewed for various TV networks and posed for photos with past Olympians. I am sure the morning will be one the boys will remember forever and I would like to thank Mr Stephen Guise (Hunter 6R) for inviting the boys and Mr Michael Connolly (Primary Pastoral Leader) for taking the boys to this event.

At yesterday morning’s assembly, I spoke to the boys about the Marist characteristic of Love of Work. St Marcellin Champagnat was a man of work and action, known as someone always willing to roll up his sleeves. We follow his example in being generous of heart and constant and persevering in our daily work and the efforts we undertake for our own ongoing learning. As I visit classrooms to talk to boys about their learning goals, it has been pleasing to see this love of work so present in our primary school.

Term 3 Sport

Another busy term of sport has already commenced, with trainings and games taking place in tennis, basketball, rugby league and track and field. Term 3 is also a unique term in the fact that competition takes place on both Friday afternoons (basketball) and Saturday mornings (rugby league and tennis), across a number of different venues. As such, it is important that all families ensure they check the College App for information regarding all of these sports.

On a Friday afternoon, the College charters a bus to and from the ‘away’ basketball venues. Parents are reminded to inform a staff member if their child will not be returning to the College on the bus after their game.

The poster below is displayed across all our venues and serves as a reminder to all competitors and spectators of the importance of respectful interactions and sportsmanship.

From the Primary Learning Leader – Ms Jen Little

The Primary newsletter last week reminded parents and students about the importance of setting achievable goals to assist in progressing their learning. Our Learning Portal is a valuable reference point for students that contains a number of resources to assist students when it comes to revising their learning. Each subject page includes the teaching resources that have been used in class and these are a wonderful reference for students when they are absent or attending instrumental music lessons. There are also additional resources for students on the Mathematics and English pages aimed at strengthening student understanding or concepts covered in class. Please note the following recommendations for students in order to assist with meeting their goals:

  1. Consistent application with homework – homework should take approximately 40 minutes – 1 hour each night, inclusive of reading. Please ensure your child has a quiet place to complete their homework. If they are finishing quickly, please check the quality of their work. Students finishing quickly can also work on additional activities that can be found on the Learning Portal as outlined above.
  2. 20 minutes reading every night (including weekends) – studies have been conducted about the academic advantages to students who engage in 20 minutes reading each night from an early age. You can find information about this here.
  3. Deliberate and strategic engagement with their Assessment Calendar – last week, Assessment Calendars for Years 5 and 6 were emailed to parents and students. Students should keep these dates in mind when studying for examinations. Creating a study timetable at home will assist in building important skills for learning.
  4. Attendance at before school tutoring – please encourage students to attend before school tutoring if they have any questions about their learning. This is open each morning between 8:00am and 8:30am for all students.
  5. Regular opportunities to write – it is important for students, wherever possible, to engage in regular writing. This assists in building writing stamina and developing important communication skills that transcend all subjects. You can read more on strategies to build writing stamina here.

Robotics Club

Each Thursday at first break, students have been given the opportunity to attend a Coding Club. This term, the students are working on creating block code to move spheros around an obstacle course.
