Sport News

Mr Luke Caplick

Last weekend we commenced the official AIC Term 3 sporting season with all Round 1 Basketball, Tennis and Rugby League fixtures against St Laurence’s College. It was great to see the boys out enjoying their respective sports and representing the College in the manner we’ve all come to expect of Marist College Ashgrove students.

Our younger Tennis teams fared well against SLC; however, our 1st IV went down after a rain-interrupted start to the morning. We had a tough day in our basketball teams looking to improve before their matches this weekend against St Edmund’s, Gregory Terrace, Ambrose Tracey and Villanova. Our rugby league teams performed exceptionally well with a clean sweep against Laurie’s across all age groups. The 1st XIII boys extracted some type of revenge for our Round 1 1st XV loss with a convincing win 52-4 win over traditional rivals from South Brisbane.

Congratulations to the following boys who were named Captains of their respective First teams last week:

  • Basketball – Sean O’Hara (Captain) and Jesse O’Neill (Vice-captain)
  • Tennis – Kyle Ephraims
  • Rugby League – Ky Rashleigh and Hayden Lammon

With Term 3 sports well and truly underway, we are also into the Track and Field season following another enjoyable College House Athletics Carnival last Friday. This was a great day of high participation and offered our talented Track and Field athletes the chance to showcase their abilities in front of the College.

Congratulations to Ridley House who were our 2021 Athletics Champions. Results table below:

Age championship events are still running and should be finalised by this time next week.

Our Track and Field athletes have commenced their first week of training to mark the start of the season. As 6-time defending champions from 2015-2020, we will be looking to continue this trend and defend our title. The commitment of our best athletes is important for this to occur and it is important that athletes get into good training habits from the start. The formula for success in sport is not a secret. It is simply turning up to training on a regular basis and working hard.

Please note that it would not be uncommon for our AIC sporting teams to change slightly after last weekend in readiness for Round 2 v St Edmund’s College. In fact, we encourage our coaches to constantly monitor players from all teams with scope to change teams based on player performance, attendance and attitude at training and on game day. Rewarding players for consistent effort is an important part of our sports program.

I would like to again strongly remind students about following through when a commitment is given. Marist College Ashgrove is a place where many opportunities are on offer across many different areas. The College is very mindful not to overburden students. I have mentioned on more than one occasion recently that the Sports Office is committed and has the flexibility to negotiate training schedules where a student has made other co-curricular commitments.

The College endeavours to provide the best possible coaching across the sports program. In fact, we have many well qualified coaches in place so that our students and the program continue to improve. It would be disappointing to source quality coaches and not have students attend the sessions without apology. Please urge your son to follow through with the commitment given or have him come to the Sports Office to talk through any issues. We are here to help.

I must also remind all students of the College’s expectations when it comes to uniform standards. Parental support in this matter is essential and will be much appreciated. Please see below the uniforms you are expected to wear when representing the College in Term 3 Sports:

A reminder too that we must conduct ourselves in the correct manner, whether it be during the game or as a parent/spectator.

I wish everybody involved with Rugby League, Basketball and Tennis all the best this weekend. Please enjoy!
