Mentone
Searching for a series has just been made that little bit easier at the Mentone Campus. A ‘special’ project has been running in the Mentone Resource Centre, identifying and cataloguing books that are part of a series.
The project started by amending the titles of all print books in our cataloguing system that are part of a series. Now when students search for a print book, the series information appears on the title line. For example, the image below shows the search results a student will see when searching for a book in our popular ‘Percy Jackson’ series. Now when hovering over the title of a print book, it will display the series title as well as the volume number, making it easier to work out the order in which to read the books. Click here to search the catalogue.
The project also involved physically labelling the books on the fiction shelves. See image below. Prior to this, some books were easily recognisable to be part of a series, however many were not, especially when the series changed their covers with different editions. Now every book that is part of a series is very recognisable with a coloured label at the top of the spine and its corresponding volume number in the series. This helps students identify if the book they are after is part of a series, and also reduces time when shelving books at the end of the day.
Bentleigh East
Genres – a way to help students browse the shelves of similar types of books. At St Bede’s we use “Genres” to assist students and staff to locate Fiction. Our goal is to encourage reading and continue to make it easier for students to “find that special book”.
At the Bentleigh East Resource Centre, the Fiction is arranged on the shelves by Genre, then by Author last name. We have also associated some Non-Fiction books with Fiction, such as the War Genre. Students browsing may find a gem in the Non-Fiction that may lead them onto reading a Fiction book of that particular era e.g. World War Two – Morris Gleitzman.
Different Genres have specific authors that are famous for their speciality. Agatha Christie is a long standing author of the Mystery and Suspense genre whilst Rick Riordan, author of the Percy Jackson series comes under the Fantasy genre.
Genres have been added to the catalogue so students and staff can search the catalogue by Genre and find a title that matches their interests.
Genrefication is a library term that is used when collections are merged and sorted by genre, rather than using the straight Author order or Dewey Decimal order. Both these ordering systems assist once the books are placed in their genre.
Genres that we use in cataloguing include: Adventure, Crime, Dystopia, Fantasy, History, Mystery and Suspense, Relationships, Science Fiction, War.
