Junior School Report

Term 3 is well underway and we hope our students, parents and families are travelling well.

Although remote learning can have its difficulties, our teachers are working hard to ensure that students are remaining engaged and challenged in their learning. This term students across Years 7- 9 have had the opportunity to:

  • Attend an online KIOSC excursion where they learnt about Artificial Intelligence
  • Compete in a Home Group Challenge where students aim to be the most active throughout the day
  • Design a Food Safety and Hygiene Poster
  • Participate in a Science Quiz
  • Write a persuasive essay on a topic of their choice
  • Design a skateboard deck using graffiti and street art style techniques

The Alpine School for Student Leadership

In Term 3, five Year 9 Scoresby students were given the opportunity to attend the Alpine School for Student Leadership.

This residential camp provides students with an opportunity to build on their personal and leadership skills by developing and leading a team project on an area of their passion.

Our students have thoroughly enjoyed their time at Alpine and have written a reflective report to share with you their highlights so far.

Our Year 9 Scoresby team which includes, Sebastian Bennett, Madelyn Crennan, Imogen Sutherland, Lola Allain and Chloe Atkin, have been chosen to go to The School for Student Leadership. There is a total of nine different schools that were selected and have combined together to create a community of forty two students in total. Each student takes on daily responsibilities to follow such as duties we have to complete in order to keep the campus running, doing our own washing and taking on the role of joining committees to help improve the School for Student Leadership.

All of the students have been given the task of a Community Learning Project (CLP). Where each school group addresses an issue in their community and is then given the task of searching for different ways that they can aid their community by approving upon it, trying to make it a better place to live.

The Scoresby team have set a goal of helping to raise awareness of the topic of domestic violence, trying to provide support to people whose lives are being affected by it. If our school supports our idea, we have a plan of gathering supplies to be donated to different organizations around Melbourne. We intend to try to create awareness of the issue by visiting local schools and informing them of the issue. We have been learning about the nine different learning concepts to aid with our leadership skills.

We have also been doing a range of different outdoor activities such as canoeing, surfing, mountain biking and overnight expeditions. While we are attending The School for Student Leadership we go on a total of two overnight expeditions where we collaborate with other schools to go on overnight hikes/canoeing trips. Each student is allocated a certain group role in order to make our experience run smoothly. We have our second expedition coming up next week, where we will spend a total of two nights off campus, half of it will be hiking and the other half will be canoeing. We are enjoying the new experience of living with different people and exploring the coastal environment of Marlo.

Tips on staying positive in lockdown:

Last week marked 200 days of Melbournians being in lockdown. Whilst this has been a challenging time for our students, it is important to congratulate them for their perseverance and commitment to their learning. The Junior School team took the opportunity to seek some advice from our students on how they managed to stay positive during lockdown:

  • Make sure you get outside during the recess and lunch breaks to clear your mind.
  • I have found listening to music a good calming technique for me.
  • Make sure you eat enough and drink enough water to stay hydrated throughout the day.
  • Have a clean workspace.
  • Stay in touch with family and friends.
  • Try and stay active between classes; even if it means go for a short walk around the house.

We encourage students to continue to try their best, and communicate with their teachers and/or Year Level Coordinator if they are having any issues or concerns.
