Writing:
In the last three weeks, our Year 3 students have been immersed in all things Science Fiction! In writing in particular, students identified Science Fiction features and even created their own Sci-fi themed narratives by following the 7 steps to narrative writing. Aliens? Teleportation? Space? Mutants? Our students have uncovered it all. Students have also been looking at grammar to support their narrative writing as well as adding to their Writer’s Notebook to fuel their creativity!
This week, our writers will embark on a new unit called Information Reports! Where they will learn how to research and write about a topic with the purpose of educating and informing others. Feel free to ask our little researchers any interesting facts about their topic.
Kaan H Narrative in 3C: ‘Journey To The Future.’ Kaan has been following the steps of a good writer by making sure that he revises and edits his work before publishing. Have a read of Kaan’s entertaining and action-packed Sci-fi story!
Reading:
In Reading, the Year 3 students have completed a film study of the Michael Jordan’s 1996 hit, Space Jam. The students identified the realistic and science fiction elements of the movie, examined morals, and critiqued it as a movie review.

I enjoyed watching this movie through Zoom because I could watch it with my little sister. It would be better to watch it at school with my friends, though because we could hear each other's laughs and experience it together.

Space Jam review
The Nerdlucks wanted to take the Loony Tunes back to Moron Mountain but Bugs Bunny challenged them to play basketball. So the Nerdlucks stole the NBA basketball player's talent to get better. Then Michael Jordan joined the Looney Tunes team and defeated the Monstars.
My favourite character is Bugs Bunny because he is funny and I liked the part where he sneaks into Michael’s house to get all the basketball things.
I liked this movie because it was fun and it was in both the real world and a cartoon world and I also liked how they all played basketball.
I would recommend this to my dad because he likes to watch movies of this kind.
While I was watching the movie on zoom it was fun and I even turned off the lights and closed the curtain. It felt liked it was a movie night even though it was day time.
For the remainder of the term, we will be synthesising and summarising non-fiction texts. Students will recognise their prior knowledge, gather new information from a text, and determine what their new understandings are. They will then summarise this overall knowledge in a written form and orally.
Maths:
In the last three weeks in Maths, our Year 3 students have been learning about 2D shape and using terms such as corner, edge and face to classify familiar shapes and objects. The students have also described the transformation of objects and shapes and shapes using the vocab of flip, slide and turn. ‘During our first lesson on 3D shape we had learned about the different types 3D shapes and what 3D meant. It was very fun and I would do it again’ Ella 3A
Students have learnt about unit fractions and how many of these make a whole. They have learnt and used new vocabulary such as numerator and denominator to describe fractions. Students have also focused on showing a fraction of a collection. ‘My favourite part of our Maths unit has been working out the fractions of a collection and solving them with drawings’ Steven 3A
Curriculum Units:
Reading:• Informational and Online Texts
Writing:• Revising and Editing and Information Reports
Numeracy:• Time and Fractions
We have hit the midterm mark and it has flown by. A short stint back at school meant we were able to enjoy engaging back with on site learning and spending time with our friends.
We got to celebrate an Olympics day on Thursday 5th August. The grade 4 students showed true Olympic spirit with everyone taking part, having fun and celebrating with big smiles. Definitely a wonderful sight to see!
On site learning lasted a short time and before we knew it, Lockdown 6.0 was here. The students have continued to adapt, be flexible, show resilience and engage in our online classes with positivity. A pyjama day was even thrown in the mix for a bit of fun.
A big pat on the back to everyone for their continued adaptability and ability to try our best in the circumstances that we find ourselves in.
The grade 4 teachers are very proud of everyone.
Here is a small snapshot of some of the work we’ve been doing in grade 4.
During Independent Reading Veda from 4C has been identifying characters traits for two main characters in the book Awful Auntie.
Jacqueline from 4C believes the Brisbane 2032 Olympics should include a staring contest!
Mohamed from 4C has been thinking about how long it would take to complete certain events or activities and has used a unit of time to match.
Reading
Throughout remote learning the grade 5’s have started reading their class text ‘Loyal Creatures’. The students have done an exceptional job at diving deep into the text and analysing different themes such as Loyalty, War, relationships, family, courage and sacrifice. They have been practising the skill of ‘synthesising’ to see how their knowledge and thoughts have changed in regards to different themes.
Here is an example of Wilson Lai from 5C’s response:
Writing
In writing the students have been learning about important events in history to prepare themselves for writing their own historical narrative. Events such as Titanic, Man landing on the Moon and the eruption of Pompeii. Students are now in the process of completing their drafting process and making a start on publishing their historical narrative based on a chosen historical event that interested them. Some of the topics students have chosen to write on are: Anne Frank, Nazi Germany, WW2, Man landing on the moon (from a female astronaut’s perspective). The students have thoroughly enjoyed learning about these historic events.
Maths
Students have finished up learning about Angles and have now moved onto looking at the addition and subtraction of Fractions and Decimals Operations. They have been revising what they already know about fractions and decimals before moving towards to process for how they add and subtract them.
Reading: In reading we have been reading the Historical fiction text called Then. It’s the sequel to Morris Gleizman’s book Once. We have been making summaries, predictions and inferences off of what we have been reading. Sometimes our teacher will let our imaginations go free and let us draw what we pictured to be happening.
Writing: In writing we have been writing our very own historical fiction on a chosen time in history. We have been using what we learnt from the book Then and implementing it into our own historical fiction. We also look at how to make our writing feel like it really was written in that time frame and making it believable.
Math: In math we have been looking at operations and different ways to use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Our teachers have set us work at our level even through home learning. We are just about to start a new topic of measurement.
Art: In art we are finally leaving self-portraits and are doing our very own creation of a bird. We look at Leonardo DaVinci’s work and his backstory and implementing some of his ideas and our ideas to do our very own work.
Science: In science we are no longer learning about natural disasters but moving onto the topic of Energy and its sources. We’ve learnt the 11 types of energy and energy sources.
PBL: In PBL we have moved onto the topic of natural disasters and how they are built up. We will be making 3D models made of clay in the shape of a natural disaster and how it forms.
French: In French we have been learning about places people live and how to say different addresses. We have also been learning about the placement of items and where they are.
Sport: In sport we have been playing striking and fielding games and learning about the different positions there is to play. In P.E we are doing inter school sports and have tried out our 5 games we can chose from. The sports are Basketball, Tennis, Volleyball, Cricket and Baseball and we can choose one to compete in.
