Students celebrated their 100 days of Prep! To celebrate students were encouraged to make something that represented 100 days. Across the prep class’ we saw some amazing and creative 100 days projects from posters, hats and t-shirts. Students spent the day celebrating with their class engaging in lots of fun activities. Students made crowns, completed a 100’s day seesaw activity, exercised to 100 and raced to 100. Students also celebrated their special day with 4 special guests – Granny teachers! If that wasn’t enough, students also went home with a special 100 days certificate and a 100’s day cookie to commemorate all of their hard work through out the year so far.
To celebrate the 2021 Tokyo Olympics students participated in mini Olympics with P-2 students. To support their classroom country students dressed in their country colours. Students enjoyed sports such as gumboot throwing, hurdles, tunnel ball, mini javelin and relay racing. Students cheered on their peers and showed off their sports skills as they competed in each activity.
Students have gotten back into the swing of remote learning. Preps have been completing seesaw activities and attending Zoom lessons with their teacher and peers. Many thanks to all families helping us stay connected!
From The Prep Team.
Before Remote learning 6.0, Brookside held their own version of the Olympics. The students participated in various activities, including Gum boot throwing, tunnel ball, basketball targets, running, relay races, javelin throwing and hurdles. Everyone had lots of fun and had a go at all the events. The main idea was for students to have a go and have fun!
George from 4C said that:
It was a cool Thursday morning, I woke up feeling excited. Today is my Olympic day! I quickly ate my MIGHTY Olympic (Weet-bix) breakfast and I frantically went to get dressed into my green and navy blue t-shirt and navy blue pants. As quick as a jaguar I was at school and I saw my Olympic friends. We entered our Olympic meeting area and we were ready to represent Iran. We were then escorted to the Olympic stadium, pumped and ready to begin our events. Out of all of the events I liked the relay races the best, because the field was wet and I kept sliding. Even though there were no medals I had the best time and experience. Before we knew it, it was all over and we were back in our 4C classroom and the Olympic dream was over!

During remote learning the year 1s have been busy writers, readers and mathematicians.
We have been learning about the features of a narrative including the setting, beginning and problem and solution. Check out our amazing masterpieces in writing.
In maths we have been learning how to add and subtract by using number sentences, adding on and crossing off as useful strategies.
In Initial Lit we have been learning about the “bossy e” and more tricky words!
We are now in the second week of our lockdown No.6
Students have shown real resilience in remote learning from home and worked through the Seesaw lessons with enthusiasm. Teachers have seen increased student engagement in the activities presented on Seesaw which is great because the teaching and learning is continuing the same program that would be taught onsite. Week 6 is Science Week and there have been many Science activities added to Seesaw to make our students ‘little scientists’. We encourage all students and families to have a go at these wonderful activities and report their findings via zoom to their child’s grade.
In Literacy, we have been continuing to build our knowledge of reading strategies by working on the main idea and then summarising texts. In reading, we have been making personal connections to stories and using clues to work out the author’s message. We have also been comparing fiction and non-fiction texts.

In Maths, the Year 2’s have been working on multiplicative thinking using arrays. An array is a combination of rows and columns. Each row has an equal number of items, and each column has an equal number of items in order to solve a worded problem.
Here are some examples of worded problems that students will be working on:
Miss Jones has 8 pencils. She has 4 tables, and she put the same number of pencils on each table. How many pencils on each table?
Mr. Smith has 24 lollies. He has 4 lolly bags, and he puts the same number of lollies in each bag. How many lollies are in each bag?
Making equal groups by Zara 2C in a Seesaw activity.
Important reminders.
The Book Week Parade is still scheduled for Week 7. Please have your costumes ready! The Year 2 teachers are very excited about their costumes and look forward to the Book Week Parade.
Don’t forget Wacky Wednesday on Zoom this week on 18th August and of course Brookside’s Got Talent. All of this will be communicated during your zoom lessons and is also on Compass.
The Year 2 Team.
In Prep to Year 2 Performing Arts, we are involved in preparing a production of “Eddie the Penguin Saves the World!” a musical play all about environmental issues, from recycling to saving water and energy. The Preps will be playing penguins, the Year 1s will be Polar bears and the Year 2s will be humans.
Each year level has two songs to learn, complete with lyrics and choreography, which they started practising on site and have now been upload on Seesaw to continue practising at home. Students really enjoyed having a go at learning the actions and songs in class and will hopefully take this opportunity to practise at home and memorise their songs. We have one final song for all the Preps, Ones and Twos to practise together as a finale at the end of the play.
The Year 2 students took part in class auditions to assign characters to those students who indicated they were interested in a speaking part. The script has been uploaded to Seesaw for those students, so that they can continue to practise their lines at home.
We are also learning about performance techniques, such as focus and energy, using facial expression and body language to show emotion, following stage directions, projection and diction and how to use these in our performance. We also had fun dressing up in some of the costumes in the drama room.
We are looking forward to coming out of lockdown so that we can come to class to rehearse our songs and lines together and prepare our penguin and polar bear head bands to wear. Stay tuned for further updates and a performance date to be announced.
