Indigenous Literacy Day

On Wednesday, it was Indigenous Literacy Day. This day is a national celebration of Indigenous culture, stories, language and literacy.

It is celebrated during Literacy Week on the 1st Wednesday in September. Indigenous Literacy Day aims to raise funds to raise literacy levels and improve the lives and opportunities of Indigenous Australians living in remote and isolated regions.

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation's (ILF) approach is to raise literacy levels at a community level with book supplies. New, culturally appropriate books are gifted to schools and organisations operating in remote communities.

To get involved or help, you can visit the Indigenous Literacy Foundation website which provides lots of ways in which you can help close the literacy gap.

Family Engagement Core Group

On Monday 30th August, our College Wellbeing Team hosted a workshop titled Supporting Your Child's Wellbeing. Thank-you to the parents who came along via Zoom to find out more about the support available to your child as well as our implementation of The Resilience Project. It was a great event hosted by our experienced Wellbeing Team!

This event was an initiative of the Family Engagement Core Group who are currently seeking feedback from families to direct their future planning. If you have time, please provide your feedback to us and earn a point for your child's College House!

Asthma Week 1st-7th September

Hey Australia, it’s time to think differently about what we’re breathing in.  This Asthma Week (1-7 September) we’re supporting a new campaign ‘Air Nutrition’ – you are what you breathe.  Asthma Australia has joined forces with key players in respiratory, health and climate to present this campaign designed to encourage Aussies like us, to start caring as much about the air we breathe as the food we eat.

In Australia, we may consider ourselves to have clean and healthy air, but this is not always the case. Many people may be shocked to learn that in 2015, air pollution was attributed to over 2,500 deaths (1.6% of all deaths) in Australia. Exposure to pollution can have a health impact both daily and over time. Consistent exposure can lead to developing serious long term health conditions like asthma, heart disease, lung conditions, stroke and cancer.   That’s why reducing daily exposure can have immediate and lifelong benefits for all of us.

To learn more about Air Nutrition and how to get it, visit www.asthma.org.au/air-nutrition.

Birth Congratulations

We congratulate Rachel Partridge (staff member), Tom and Harlow on the recent arrival of baby Dusty Colin Jenkins and wish them every blessing for the future.

Condolence

We keep staff member, Dilshan Fernando, in our prayers.  Dilshan has several members of his extended family living in Sri Lanka.  Last week his wife's father passed away from COVID-19 and there are eight other members of his family currently infected with the virus.  His brother in law remains in ICU.  Please keep Dillshan and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

2021 Arts and Design Technologies Showcase Exhibition

It’s on again……Our annual Arts and Design Technologies Showcase Exhibition will again be going VIRTUAL.

This year we will be looking at things from a ‘different perspective’.

Family and friends will be able to view this exhibition from the comfort of their own home during Week 5 of Term 4.

The exhibition will showcase student work from Foundation up to Year 12, that has been designed, manufactured and created in Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Visual Communication Design, Media, Technology - Wood, Metal and Food, both at school and at home.

How do I enter?

There are two ways to enter your work into the Virtual Showcase Exhibition:

  1. Your teacher will select work created in class or during remote learning.
  2. You can enter work in our new category ‘Art and Technology at Home’. This category is for work that you may have done at home during the year, that does not relate to school.

The school holidays are the perfect opportunity to be creative and to get your entries ready.  All entries must be submitted to your teacher by Friday 22nd October.

Supporting your children with maths at home - Resources from the Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV)

Helping your kids to do maths at home can be  a positive experience!  Maths is taught to and learned differently by kids these days.  It is about understanding the reasoning and using strategies to do maths. Focus on thinking and having a go, not about right or wrong!

To help you support your children with maths at home to increase their interest and engagement in maths, MAV has produced a number of tip sheets and resources for both primary and secondary students on their parent support pages.  You can find them at https://www.mav.vic.edu.au/Resources/parents

Recycling Old School Uniform Items

We have already received donations of many uniforms that are no longer required by families.  Keep them coming!

With the upcoming changeover to our new school uniform in Term 4, we encourage families to continue donating superseded uniform items to Rotary Donations-In-Kind, rather than sending them to landfill.  A collection bin is available at our College Office for items that are clean and in good condition when we return to school.  Donated items will then be distributed to communities in developing countries.
