Book Week at St Augustine’s College

Thank you to the many students who dressed up for Book Week last Monday. It was terrific to see so many students having fun even though we could not be at school. The costumes ranged from football players to mermaids, Harry Potter characters to a racing car driver. The number who were dressed as book characters was impressive. We hope that you have all had a chance to see the Book Week video where we combined all the photos together.

The winner of the Book Week colour-in competition is Amelie Z in Year 1. She has won a $10 voucher for the canteen. The entries were very good and we have decided to award all entries a $5 voucher for their efforts.

Scholastic Book Club Issue 6

Thank you to those families still supporting our Scholastic Book Club. The Issue 6 Book Club orders went in on Friday 27th August, with ordering via the LOOP facility at Scholastic. The books should arrive very soon. We will bundle up the books, label them and let you know if you have something to collect from the College Office.

Library During Remote Learning

Now that we are back in remote learning mode, the Library is recommending students keep up their reading using the two ebook providers we have subscribed to: Wheelers and SORA.  Both of these are available from the Library links on SIMON. Years 3/4 students have SORA set up in a tab on their laptops for easy access.

Why Reading Matters

This book review from Barbara Braxton (Charles Sturt University) highlights why reading print books is important for our students. We have just bought this Bluey book from Scholastic BookClub.

Bluey: Daddy Putdown

 <https://www.penguin.com.au/books/bluey-daddy-putdown-9781761041174>

Puffin, 2021 32pp., hbk., RRP $A16.99  9781761041174

Mummy has gone to a baby shower and Daddy has been left to put Bluey and Bingo to bed.  But Bluey is very concerned because it won't be the same. No matter what ideas Daddy has, she longs for her mum to be home.  Until she has an idea...

Based on the highly successful television series, this new release strengthens  the link between screen and media, a critical one as they learn about the value of being able to take their time with print, examine the illustrations and read it again and again whenever they want - all vital concepts about print. They easily relate to characters they know, which as well as adding another dimension to them by offering a behind-the-scenes look at their lives and loves,  they can also focus on the story more deeply.

Perfect for fans of the show…
